Why do older people have trouble swallowing their food?
My dad is almost 92, and he seems to have trouble swallowing his food. It takes him a great deal of time to eat, and he says that the food seems to get bigger once it's in his mouth. Sometimes he coughs as if he is choking just a little bit. Is there anything we can do to help?
Thanks so much for the advice! I meant to put this in Senior Citizens and I think I goofed, but you came through, anyway! Dad lives with me, and I always go in with him on doctor visits, so I'll ask. I have a brother who is profoundly mentally retarded and always chokes on his food and drink; they now use a thickener in his drinks. Do you recommend this?

Downgrade his diet a little bit. He should eat soft foods and chopped up meats (mechanical soft diet). I am guessing he would have an easier time with things.
The real concern is liquids. If his swallowing has weakened (Very commong with age) he may have trouble getting liquids down and can aspirate (take liquid into his lungs) without knowing it. If this is the case, he would need to have thicker liquids (they are easier to control even with a weak swallow). He really needs to mention this to his doctor. In the meantime, a mechanical soft diet will be much easier for him to eat. Also three small meals and three snacks will allow him to eat less in each sitting, but still get what he needs throughout the day

as you age, your muscle use begins to deteriorate. especially at that age, it is common for swallowing to become a issue.
He should talk to his dr about it. It can become very serious. if you are the one that takes him to the dr appts make sure you bring it up.
