OK guys, Mauser Yugo M48, looking to make a sporter.?

Having trouble locating a good stock, prefer wood to composite. Also would like a target grade or adjustable trigger. Love the gun, bought it 5 years ago for $75 in unfired condition, has no blems whatsoever, shoots great for what it is, just the military stock sucks butt.

And maybe some tips if you have done one before?

Update:

yes i bought it 5 years ago from a friend. I actually had no idea what the gun was, i just knew $75 was a good deal for it. I am positive it was never fired before me. the bolt was actually smooth as glass. It shoots a little right of the factory front sight, but its shoots that way everytime. I have shot the old berdan primed surplus and some other modern factory loads. Think I have Winchester right now. All numbers match. About the stocks, I have heard there is some fitting required, was this true in your case?

I got a few of those M48s and have sported one. It's the skimpy sights that bothered me, so I put an aperture sight that replaced the rear sight and a fiber optic front post and am very happy.

I recommend Boyd's for the stock as well. I have a couple and they are very nice. I finished my own, ordering unfinished ones and both required a bit of sanding, but the results were beautiful. You can get a huge selection of woods and laminates,,,,if the website become confusing, give them a call they are real nice folks. I opted for unfinished Walnut, used maybe 10 coats of blo and then topped and polished with beeswax mix.

There are a number of triggers to use, Brownell's offer a wide assortment. I have one from a company called Huber that is adjustable and it will make a major improvement in the military two-stage Mauser trigger.

Scope mounts are pretty straightforward. Your gunsmith will need to D&T for the bases. Make sure he knows what he's doing. Get quality bases!

If yours is like mine, unissued and possibly not fired, the matching bolt was a bit snug in the action. We striped it down and degreased it, then used valve grinding compound (auto parts store) inside the bolt action and cycled it maybe 200 times. (this news will freak out some readers I'm sure) Then carefully removed all the residue of the compound and oiled it up and it was a lot, lot smoother. Write me on this process if you need to do it.

For an investment of less than three bills, it's a fine shooting rifle and there a lot of 8mm bullets still available for your custom loads.

Pretty much they are the same gun; just the K98 was made in Germany and the Yugo M48 is not. Price very depending were you are in the country. I have seen the Yugo go for $200 to $350, try to locate one with scope taps in it, they cost more upfront but if you want to mount a scope they give a better scope mount and reduce the cost and risk of having the gun drill and tapped for a scope mount. And I suggest mounting a scope to real get the best rang and shot placement out of your gun.

The M48 is a good rifle, I've owned several over the years and was happy with every one. When you do look for different stocks, you'll have to ask for one specifically for the M48, while being every bit as strong as any other '98 based action, is just a hair shorter (1/4" I believe) than a standard K98k action. Some standard K98k parts won't fit it because of this, floorplates, bolts, stocks, Redfield or Leupold one piece scope bases for a standard 98, etc.

And thanks to whoever game me the thumbs down on my answer. I guess it's easier to click "thumbs down" than to bring actual knowledge into the discussion.

Look at Boyds Gun Stocks. Look them up and they have really reasonable prices for all sorts of stocks. I use them for my firearms.
