Oh, this happened to me and it was real. We had bought a house as single persons (planning to marry) and I had brought some belongings over one evening. Then I found a chair, a radio and a small end table, and tuned in some soft music. I sat there in the dark, empty house, thinking, "What the hell am I doing? This is to be permanent. Am I satisfied with this?" You see, it wasn't the question I had to ask her that was important, it was the question that I had to ask myself. How could I know if this was the right thing to do? I thought back over previous lovers, and even of those who had shown interest in me. If I didn't do this, it wasn't the end of the road. Could I deal with the relatives and parents and how they'd treat me if I called it off? Then I thought of their marriages and the question I needed to answer started to take shape.

That was an easy question to answer. But it was coming up with the right question that was the task, and asking it of myself--not her.

Where that question led to, nobody could imagine. But there's no doubt that it was a good marriage.
