Why are some people silly enough to say that "atheists can't prove god don't exist"?

They don't have to prove anything because they make no claim. They simply dismiss the claims the believers make. That is not a claim of anything. I need provide no proof that no gods exist just because I dismiss claims that have no evidence. If you claim a god exists you can reasonably be expected to provide some evidence. If not, you're claim can be reasonably dismissed without evidence against it. Atheism is not a religion, it is not a belief: it is simply dismissing a claim that has no evidence, cannot be proven, has no use, and has no reason. Give it your best shot.

Update:

corncob: If a god existed to create these things, by the very definition of a "god" they would have been done without all the flaws. That don't make the grade.

A very good summation of a part of Logic 101. For those that believe you can't prove God, you certainly could provide evidence of His actions in this world, for example evidence of a global flood should be easy to find in the geological column or in the polar ice caps. Similarly any other action taken by god in the Bible should have some sort of evidence for it.

I'm really sorry I got here so late for this question!

I'm incredibly impressed with the eloquence with which you've managed to summarize that which seems to have so many of the faithful confused beyond reason (yeah, I realize I just used "reason" in the same sentence as "the faithful"; I trust you'll forgive that transgression).

I always enjoy it when there is a response to something like this to the effect of: "look at the world around you and you'll find proof of god's existence".... We ARE looking at the world around us; it is precisely because we look closely at our world that we have come to doubt any group that claims it was all "poofed" into existence by the will of some all powerful creature. There are perfectly sound scientific explanations to all natural phenomenon without having to invoke fairy tales. I think my favorite quote on the subject comes from Douglas Adams: “Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?”

The burden of proof does lie with those making the claim, not with those denying that claim. I can only prove gods inexistence to the same extent that I can prove the inexistence of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or Humpty Dumpty. Religion may have served a purpose at one point in our early history, but we no longer wonder at the source of lightning; we know better than to try and appease a volcano..... Religion is little more now than a divider of the human race; a last haven for the bigoted, the delusional, and the hateful.

Source(s): Yikes! Kinda got carried away there..... That's what happens when people try to convert me twice in one day.... lol

    Why is that claim "silly"?

The revelation of God is a personal experience. It is one that is beyond my command of the vocabulary. Because, I can not present it well, does not lessen the experience. I also have a problem with explaining " a feeling" or an "instinct" or a "sense". That does not make them less real and valid.

I imagine the same could be said of other religions, because I do not understand, or did not experience, does not lessen what others felt and or observed.

The difference is that my God offers a plan of salvation and eternal peace. To my knowledge this is not offered elsewhere.

I have a problem with the word "proof". We are asked to "prove" in a courtroom, and often think we do, but WHAT IF, it had been different jurors? What if one key piece of "evidence" had or had not been admitted" What if the testimony of one person had been allowed or dismissed? What if there had been a more skilled attorney?

This is not a question of "proof" or evidence anyway, never has been...........it is a question of faith. Either you have it or you do not. I feel no need to tear something down , (Buddism, for example only,) simply because I do not embrace it.

but they do make a claim, the belief that there is no God or gods.

    Encyclopedia Britannica:

Critique and denial of metaphysical beliefs in God or divine beings.

Unlike agnosticism, which leaves open the question of whether there is a God, atheism is a positive denial.

    Websters Dictionary:

one who believes that there is no deity

    Wikipedia:

Atheism, as a philosophical view, is the position that either affirms the nonexistence of gods or rejects theism. When defined more broadly, atheism is the absence of belief in deities, alternatively called nontheism. Although atheism is often equated with irreligion, some religious philosophies, such as secular theology and some varieties of Buddhism such as Theravada, either do not include belief in a personal god as a tenet of the religion, or actively teach nontheism.

Many self-described atheists are skeptical of all supernatural beings and cite a lack of empirical evidence for the existence of deities. Others argue for atheism on philosophical, social or historical grounds. Although many self-described atheists tend toward secular philosophies such as humanism and naturalism, there is no one ideology or set of behaviors to which all atheists adhere.

The term atheism originated as a pejorative epithet applied to any person or belief in conflict with established religion.[8] With the spread of freethought, scientific skepticism, and criticism of religion, the term began to gather a more specific meaning and has been increasingly used as a self-description by atheists.

For the true Atheist, the claim that there is no god doesn't have to have evidence, doesn't have to be proven, and no use or reason for them to believe there is any gods.

For the Christian, they claim there is a God, there doesn't have to be any evidence, doesn't have to be proven, and there is a use and reason to believe there is a God.

So unless an Atheist doesn't have a use or reason to believe in God or a god, then they will remain an Atheist.

Someone who attacks Christians isn't an Atheist, they are antitheism. Hard core against anyone believing in a god or God and against Christianity as in a hateful and disrespectful way.

The evidence is through "Faith". Got it? How many times must we said it in order to get to your numb skull?

You are sick. Questioning other people belief and not taking their answer in good faith. What is it that you are trying to proof? That you are right and millions are wrong. So what if we believe in God, after all you are not going to Hell for it, we are, if we don't believe. That has nothing to do with you.

You talk like you are a wise person. What makes you think there is no God? Your conscience? I do not know whether you have one or believe there is such thing.

Making God a liar, if there is as God, and a fool to your friends if they do believe there is God.

Have some self respect. Other people believe is none of your business. What have you prove?

You have a right to claim whatever belief you want does not make it right does not make it wrong! It is your right! Most Christians believe this have fought for this God Given right! I did. I claim there is a God he has prov en himself to me and many others there is no denying him! I walked as an atheist for 30 years I made fun of Christians! I had a conversion experience that for me and anyone that saw the changes in me cannot deny!

You see I cant prove it to you because you have made up your mind, you give a flawed logic argument, In the same way you say he does not, I say he does where does that leave us?

I ask you to prove he does not exist! You prove to me he does not! I have evidence to convince myself and many others around me by the joy the hope the love I have now, what do you have?. A fool in his heart says there is no God(former Fool)

I have tried to disprove God exists but couldnt. Every science and philosophy I have studied adds to the list of proofs that God exists.

Scientifically, mathematically and philosophically, God exists.

Atheists only see things in our PHYSICAL perspective. something that is limited to our WORLD, our DIMENSION.

There are other realities that we cannot deny like the spiritual world. Even many atheists (though maybe not the majority) believe that a spiritual world exists based on their own personal experiences. and the best way to understand immaterial or spiritual matters would be to study philosophy and religion. It is like a person who lives in a 2-dimensional world not understanding the mechanics of a 3-dimensional world.

Im not claiming religion based on Christianity as proof of God. Im not claiming the Bible as proof either.

Atheists should read more about spiritual, philosophy, quantum physics books. atheists cannot believe in miracles because they havent experienced it nor have they even seen it. They say it can be explained scientifically but who are they to say it can be explained when even many of the doctors in the world cannot explain such spontaneous healing.

A person who experienced it first hand has this to say, "If it can be explained, then why have you not healed me?" referring to doctors and non-believers.

I have talked to many atheists and the problem in the argument is always their refusal to see or read about scientific proofs that I wanted to show them.

Religion is a way of life and a belief system. It doesnt have to be an organization. Atheism is a religion... "ism". Buddhism as Buddha's way of life, Catholicism as Jesus' way of life, Communism as a communist way of life. In the end, "God does not exist" is a claim and "Burden of Proof" works both ways.

Some of the sources you can start with are listed below

Source(s): Quantum Physics Nothing cannot become something Proof that I exist = cogito ergo sum = i think therefore i am Rene Descartes = Meditations Theory of relativity Theory of evolution A building must have a builder. a creation must have a creator. Even when you havent seen them. The prime mover What the bleep do we know? DVD Down the rabbit hole DVD The Secret DVD BBC Space Series = we are so lucky that every minute is like winning the lottery. and we all know how improbable it is to win the lottery. now multiply that by almost infinite times. That proves that everything in the universe has been designed. Miracles Possession and Exorcising Beyond and Back = near death experiences Dreams - what is reality? Every topic listed here has no intention of proving God's existence (to avoid bias) but they all consequently do prove that God exists.

I can see your point, and your argument does make sense. Well thought out.

That being said, I can understand the other side too. As a theist, I understand the frustration some people have when an atheist says, "Anyone who believes in God is just stupid since you can't prove he is real". There IS no way to prove God does not exist, just as there is no way to prove (in a hard-evidence sort of way) that he does exist. So I understand why people use that argument.

Like I said though, I see your point and the logic behind it.

It's called hubris. Some believers (not me) think that just because they believe, everyone should. They also like to put the "burden of proof" where it doesn't belong since they know there really is no tangible evidence.

  • 1 decade ago

...because they are right! It's not because you can't see things that you can't believe it. Widden your vision.

Sorry but God and sciences go together since he created it. Look around you, the world is His all and own proof. :D

He did created our bodies because without this knowledge of good and bad, flaws and qualities, happiness and sadness; we would just be unable to progress! We are eternal spirits who need to make their choice on this little part - on this earth - of our eternal life.

What's the best way to prove you can be better and recognize Him than being tested in such a terrible world which tries to believe only things you can see? He has such a great plan! Don't wait and doubt, just trust Him.

    Hope it helps! ;)
