Will Monson be called as the new President of the LDS church?
This is such a sad time for the member of the LDS church, with the passing of our great Prophet and leader, President Gorden B. Hinckely. May peace be with us all, as he has returned to his Father's Kingdom and to the presence of his dearly beloved wife.
Here's the question:
I know Pres. Thomas S. Monson is the 1st counselor of the LDS church, but does that guarantee his position to be the next President? David O. McKay was 2nd counselor to George Albert Smith. And in 1951, McKay was sustained as President of the Church even thought Pres. J. Reuben Clark Jr. faithfully served for almost 17 years.
I have absolutely nothing against Thomas S. Monson. He is a great man. I'm just wondering if there is a policy in place or if there is a possibility of the same thing happening again, as it did with David O. McKay.

It does not go by who the counselor is, but according to the presidency of the quorum of the 12. President Monson is the president of the quorum of the 12, as he is the most senior apostle. While he has been in the 1st presidency, Boyd K Packer has been the acting president of the 12. Now that tpresident Hinkley is gone, the 1st presidency dissolves, president Monson returns to act as president of the 12, and will become the next president of the Church.
In the Case of President Mckay, He was the senior apostle, in spite of being the 2nd counselor in the presidency. The counselors in the first presidency are not called by seniority, because when the prophet dies, that quorum dissolves and they return to their proper places according seniority. President Clark actually gave a wonderful talk about this when it all happened.

Most likely he will be the next President of the church. I love President Monson.
President Monson is actually the President of the Quorum of the 12 (Boyd K Packer has been acting President). Historically the Prophet has always been the President of the Quorum of the 12. The President of the Quorum of the 12 is the senior member of the Quorum. Seniority is determined by the length of Service. President Monson has been in the Quorum longer than any other member.
There is no rule that says that the prophet has to be the President of the 12 or even has to be from the 12. That is just historically how it has happened.
Here is a great article on the succession of the President of the Church.

Succession in the Church is based upon seniority. The man who has been the apostle the longest (usually) succeeds the president of the church when he passes away. I am not aware of any exception to this practice thus far.
In this way the descision is left up to the Lord, because He decides who passes away when.
As far as counselors go, they are apostles themselves but like President Eyring they aren't necessarily next in line. President Hinckley has been in the first presidency for 26 years (14 years before being the president).
The next senior apostle is President Monson, then Packer, Perry, Nelson, Oaks, Ballard, Wirthlin, Scott, Hales, Holland, Eyring, Uchtdorf, Bednar, and then Cook.
If President Packer is called to serve in the first presidency then the new "acting" president of the quorum of the 12 apostles will be Elder Perry, again because of seniority.

This is not really an answer to the OP's questions, but instead a response to Pastor Art and his gross misrepresentations of the truth.
You say that Warren Jeffs was a Prophet who followed Joseph Smith's teachings. The fact is, Joseph Smith did teach the practice of Polygamy, but we also believe in something called continuing revelation, which I assume you do not. This practice was put to a stop based on revelation received well over 100 years ago. There is good reason that the Salt Lake "branch", as you refer to it does not continue to teach this doctrine.
Also, if there is anyone in this forum who is sad, it is only because of the love that we share for Presidnet Hinckley, for he was a great man, but he was just a man and don't think for a second that we are elevating him to any other level than that, for we do know that Christ is our Master and Savior and it is only through him that we are saved and exalted.
Please do not say that we are not different thn the Catholics just because a couple of people are not exactly sure how or when the next Prophet is called and sustained. That statement is completely ridiculous as there is no campaigning for votes and multiple ballots being cast. Your blanket statement is what is sad.
Finally, you say that most Southern Baptists don't even know who the President of the Southern Baptist Convention is. That is fine. But I bet you they know who their Pastor is and wouldn't think for a moment about switching to another congregation if they didn't feel a connection with said Pastor.
When it comes down to it, the focus should be on Jesus Christ. Whether you believe it or not, that is the focus of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Have a nice day, Pastor Art.

The first presidency ends upon the death of the prophet and the two counselors rejoin the 12 apostles making 14 then the longest acting apostle becomes the new president. That would be Elder Monson there are some other logistical issues. When he becomes prophet then he calls two counselors that makes the first presidency again.

President Monson will become the next president of the church because he is the Second most senior Apostle after President Hinckley - who was the Chief Apostle. The new Apostle will be called through revelation just like we read about in the end of Acts Chapter One.

According to the protocol of the LDS church, the chief apostle will become the next president. That will be Thomas S. Monson in this case.

It is Mormon tradition that the senior apostle will be the next president. The apostles haven't "formally" chosen, but the next prophet will almost certainly be Thomas S. Monson. The "vote" is more a vote of support.

technically he's the next in line. since he is the president of the quorum of the twelve apostles. however, it still IS THE LORD'S DECISION. all 14 (the twelve apostles PLUS the two remaining in the first presidency) should have the same prompting as to who would be the rightful successor. most likely, a new president would be called on the april conference. by the way, since the president of the church died, his counselors are automatically released on their callings. the president of the quorum of the twelve apostles would be the one presiding.

If my memory serves me correctly, Hinckley and Monson were both ordained to the office of Apostle on the same day (Hinckley was ordained first). So, yeah, I'm pretty sure Monson will be the new President.
