Good Vodka drink for a guy who hates vodka?

Long story short: when I was 19 (young and stupid), I drank too much cheap vodka in one sitting and naturally hated the taste the next day. Four years later, I still do. I don't hate it as much anymore (some mixed drinks are fine), but it got to the point where just the smell of it makes me want to vomit.

Fast forward to today - a friend of mine decided to give me nine 2-liter bottles of sodas (sprite, 7-up, tonic water, etc). I went to the liquor store today, and hoping I've changed, I bought a fifth of Svedka vodka.

So, with the above drinks, what would be a good mix? Please, again, keep in mind, i hate the stuff, but I'd like to get to a point where I can handle it again (the whole point of this experiment).

Update:

For those saying "don't drink it if you don't like it" - I like some very special drinks with it, so I'm trying to welcome it back into my family of drinks.

If I have to choose from your list of choices, I would say the 7-up or Sprite...don't start with tonic water...NO!

If not I agree with cranberry juice and orange juice. Also, it sounds weird, but the Fierce Gatorage flavors are good with Vodka.

    Best Wishes

    P.S. Don't overdue!

I *think* that Svedka isn't the best to be trying if you want to forget the memory of the bad vodka experience. Go to the upper shelves and try one of those vodkas...belvidere (sp??), grey goose, stolichnaya, ciroc, etc..... any of the vodkas that are in the mid to upper 20s per bottle. THen again, since you are only TRYING to like it, try some of the individual airplane type bottles and get a few of the top shelf vodkas to see which one has the mildest taste. The better quality are almost tasteless and burnless. One to try with sodas would be vodka, coke and a splash of maraschino cherry juice. Another would be vodka and 7up with a splash of dragonfruit vitamin water. This weekend I had orange flavored vodka with tonic and a big wedge of fresh orange (squeeze the juice into the glass)....yummy! Keep the vodka in the freezer too.....the colder the vodka the better it tastes.

Throw out the sprite, 7-up, etc. Mix your first drink with a generous helping of Coke or Pepsi, make the second a little stronger, by the third, you should only taste the cola. Vodka drinker for 30 years, never heard of svedka, don't say it's swedish, I live next door in Denmark. Try some good stuff, Absolut or Smirnoff.

try half a finger width of vodka with tons of Sprite. That should wash it down OK, then gradually build up your tolerance. Unfortunately, in weak tasting drinks like Sprite, you will be able to 'sense' the vodka - maybe not taste, but the bitterness will still be there. Try investing in a bottle of Cherry or Apple Sourz, they're strongly flavoured and not a very high percentage. Put a shot of vodka in a glass, plus a couple of shots of Cherry sourz, then top it up with Coke. It tastes like cherry coke - you don't notice the vodka.

You have so much anger in you today. Is it because of what I told you yesterday about your Mom? Wait until my package gets there and you will be ok. On top of the vodka, I put some pictures of me playing in my sprinkler in my front yard. You can look at them and hug your cat, then you will be a happy boy.

If you don't like it, why force yourself to? I don't like white rum, so I just don't drink it. Bottom line is, all liquors taste bad. The key is in how much alcohol taste you can tolerate. And since vodka is nothing but alcohol taste (no fruit, no herbs, nothing but buzz) then I can understand you no liking it. Don't try to force yourself to like it; there are much more interesting liquors out there than "plain ole vodka".

I know how you feel, it took me a very long time to trust Tequilla again after a freshman dorm experience, yuck!!! Try a vodka gimlet. The lemon will help ease you stomach and mask the taste.

I would go with vodka and tonic...but you are going to taste the vodka/alcohol taste...which is not what you are going for.

Sprite or 7up and vodka doesn't suck either.

Good luck...I have the same gag reflex with whiskey...I've never gotten over it...so I just stay away from it.
