What does dry sherry taste like and why is it called dry does it make u thirsty when drinking it?
The reason I ask is I have a few recipes in a cook book that mention putting a little in and I got curious as to what it tastes like. I also don't get why dry wines are called dry when they are liquid.

The term dry when used with any wine refers to the absence of sugar. In modern terms less than 1% sugar is normally a dry wine. In my winery it normally is less than 0.05% as any sugar is detectable on the palate.
Without sugar to coat the mouth and mask the acid and tannins your mouth will dry out as you sample the wine. A little food that has fat in it will help to reduce the effect. Overtime most winedrinkers learn how to appreciate dry wines because the lack of sugar allows you to taste all the complex flavors in the wine not just the sweet ones.
My Mom used to like a little dry sherry before dinner as an aperitiff to clear the palate. Wasn't my thing!!

You shouldn't be looking in a grocery store. You would end up finding things like "cooking sherry" which is a low grade dry sherry with salt added. This will not taste good and will make an otherwise edible meal inedible. Instead, I reccomend you visit a liquor store or a wine store -- depending on how your state works. Good places to find sherry in a liquor/wine store would be in the Spain section, since it is a Spanish fortified wine. If the store is organized by varietal instead, then you would want to look near the port wine, as that is a fortified wine like sherry is (though you cannot substitute port for sherry). Not every bottle will say dry, sherry comes in a few different variations. There is generally dry, medium-dry, and cream. This refers to the amount of sugar in it (sherry is commonly drank after a meal and tends to be sweeter than most dinner wines). If it does not specifically say, you should assume it is dry (low in sugar). The other two will say that they are either medium-dry or "cream" (no actual dairy of course). Good luck. Also, try googling "Sherry" and look under the shopping section. This should give you an idea on what the bottles tend to look like, how they're labeled and the price range. You don't need to spend more than $20, that's for sure.

because it leaves dry taste in your mouth, it's more acidic to taste - dry.
there are semisweet and sweet wines, that do not require explanations - on scale of sweetness sweet wines are the most sweet, semisweets are in the middle, and dry wines are theleat sweet.
Sherry actually is kind of strong wine (stronger than regular wines) with distinctive oak barrel taste and very specific sherry flavor . Like grandmas medicine cabinet :)))

dry sherry, wine or anything alcoholic makes your mouth pucker a little after you drink it.. if you are used to a sweet tasting sherry or wine,.......it is not sweet like other wines...
it tastes fine if you like a low or no sugared sherry or wine.....the dry means an absence of sugar......
it enhances flavours when cooking especially sauces for meats....

Ask them at the grocery store, where the dry sherry is. It may, or may not, be labeled "dry" sherry; but the cream sherries WILL be labeled "cream". It should be by itself, but maybe next to the white wines

It's either dry or sweet
