Dodge intrepid trans question?

i bought a 94 dodge intrepid with what the owner said was a bad trans. my question is that the car can drive fine sometimes and sometimes it just wont go into gear. ill put it into drive and it will just sit there sometimes. if i give it gas it revs up but it just sits there like its in neutral. i would say a good 90% of the time it dose that is when i start the car and go from park to reverse. if i go from park to drive its fine. when it drops out like that i have to let the car sit for about a half an hour or so until i can get it to go again. it doesnt matter if the car is at running temp or if its cold.

what is wrong with the car?

Update:

the trans fluid looks nice and red could there be just a bad sensor or something?

The Dodge Intrepids are notorius for this problem. Under normal driving conditions it usually starts to show its ugly head around 70K miles although I have heard some cars have made it to 100K befor eit starts. he transaxel will need to be rebuilt. Do not waste time with getting a replacement from the junkyard since the chances ae you will be installing a troubled transaxle. Spend the extra to get it done right. AMMCO is a great place to go and it should cost around 1500 for a rebuild. The cars are great otherwise although some have issue with the climate control system.

You definitely have a problem with your transmition and need to take it in for a service especially if you didn't do it when you bought it knowing there was a problem.

Might be an issue with the linkage. Maybe a worn bushing or something......
