Does anyone know anything about ASBESTOS?
A guy came to my apartment door. He said he wanted to check our apartment which is on a military base in Germany for asbestos. He said that it is in all the apartments here and it is only dangerous if it is disturbed. He said we have nothing to worry about it is just routine. Something did'nt seem quite right and I dont feel convience that it is o.k. to live in a asbestos zone. So, I asked him "well if it has been disturbed then we have been breathing it in and that means we will suffer some serious health issues in the furture right". He replied blaintantly "YES". This made me mad of course so, I refused to let him come in. All the other neighbors aloud him to come in and fiddle around in there kitchens. They did'nt seem to care or check on what he was up to. We have lived here for 3 years now I am worried. Can anyone shed any light on this subject? Any facts would be great...

If you are worried about asbestos, then its illogical to throw out the one person that can determine if it is actually in the air in your apartment. Now you have no way of knowing if there is a problem. You should call the property manager and have them explain the sources of asbestos in your apartment and also have them monitor your air for a day or two. Make sure to run the vacuum the way you do during normal cleaning while the air monitor is running. If asbestos is found and the asbestos source cannot be permanently sealed off, your only choice is to stay and breathe in asbestos or move somewhere else.

Asbestos becomes dangerous if sawed or broken to release the fibres which can be inhaled. Apparently the fibres are barbed and get lodged in the lungs/upper respiratory system ultimately resulting in a fibrous mass and possible lung cancer. Compressed asbestos was used as a building material in the sixties and seventies and removal should only be done by a licensed contractor. You are unlikely to have suffered any adverse effects so long as the asbestos in question has never been disturbed in any way.

Click on asbestos on google. There have been many deaths and illnesses not to mention many law suits about asbestos.
Now for a little humor, if you will allow me, my wife is the assbestos I have ever had!!!

Asbestos is dangerous in airborne form. Which the biggest way to make it particulate is by cutting it. You can side over the existing, and not have to get an abaitment company in there. Or to remove it, call an asbestose abaitment company. it is VERY pricey. Most of the precautions are hokey pokey, but there the law.

If you do have asbestos in your home while it is not desirable as long as it is managed correctly there should be no problem. Basically it should be covered with a painted and sealed, if it is disturbed then a specialist company should be called in to to reseal it immediately.

A LOT OF OLDER BUILDINGS HAVE ASBESTOS PRESENT. IT NEEDS TO BE DISPOSED OF PROPERLY AND IS NOT A DIY JOB. IF THE PERSON HAS LEFT CONRACT NO WITH PEOPLE AND THEY ARE A RECOGNISED COMPANY AND HAVE VALID ID I WOULD LET THEM IN TO CHECK AS IT CAN BE DANGEROUS THE LONGER IT IS LEFT

its the dust that is dangerous when inhaled. my dad died of mesothilioma which is cancer of the membrane of the lung. this is caused by even just one fibre of asbestos.
