Which tax service is best?

This is the first time I've ever needed professional help to prepare my income tax return. (I guess that's a good thing.) But I don't know which service to use. H&R Block? Jackson Hewitt? Some other one? My taxed aren't super complicated, just more than I want to handle on my own and I was just wondering if anyone had recommendations for a service to use. Thanks!

They are all about the same, but I would trust a local CPA more than a service. The person behind the desk at a place like H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt could be brand new to tax preparation, and only have the company's in house training. A CPA that has been in business for a while knows the ins and outs, and must adhere to strict code of ethics, and ongoing training.

If your taxes aren't that complicated, why even use a service? The software programs that are out there are pretty comprehensive.

    Hello there,

I do my own taxes as well my whole entire families and my closest friends. I've been doing this since I was a senior in High School and everyone has always talked wonders about TurboTax, H&R Block, etc etc. I always failed to use those services because they are pricey and as a recent grad in Accounting, I shoud be able to know relevant facts regarding tax laws, dependents, expemption etc. I use freetaxusa.com and it is probably the easiest medium to do my taxes. Hardly any complications/confusions and there is nothing to download. If your earnings are under 56k, it is free, otherwise its 10 bucks.

I would use a CPA - they have spent significant time learning the rules (not a couple week training course), and also take a hard licensing test.

I bet yuo would also be surprised that they generally are not more expensive or many times as expensive as a tax prep service.

We used several over the years but we liked H&R better than any of the rest. You might be able to find someone where you live that guarantees their work (not a company, just someone who does taxes) a lot cheaper than any of the compaines that do taxes.
