There are two ways to do Family Counseling. The first is to get your BS or BA in Psychology (4 years), then get a Master's Degree (2 years) in Marriage and Family Counseling. This will allow you to become licensed to open your own counseling center in most states, or to work for a center that does only Marriage and Family Counseling (Keep in mind that if any of the family issues you deal with stem from Mental Illness, you would have to refer those cases to a Psychologist or Psychiatrist). The second is to get your BA in Social Work, then do a 1 year MSW program that allows you to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. This would qualify you to be a counselor with any Social Work agency, and to work with children, families, and a wide variety of cases. However, there's no guarantee that you would work exclusively with families, and you would not be able to open your own practice (you would have to have a supervisor).
