There are 13 stripes for the original 13 colonies. The original plan was to add a stripe for each new state, just like we do for the stars, but that became unwieldy very fast. I think they went back to 13 stripes after they'd tried 15.

Are you kidding?! There are 13 to represent the "13 Colonies" and as an added bonus..there are 50 stars on the flag to represent all 50 states.

6 white and 7 red which make 13 for the original 13 colonies. I've painted and tattooed it many many times especially after 9-11-01.
