Stat find on former 1st-round draft picks currently playing for NHL teams?
So one of my favorite hockey-centric sites produced these stats and I thought it might be of slight interest:
Former 1st-round draft picks on every NHL team's current roster (as of yesterday, Thursday.)
There are 248 league wide, including those on IR.
- Of the 248, only 117 (48%) of them are with the teams that drafted them.
- The Penguins and Flyers have the most in the NHL, with 14 each. (That's 11% of 1st-round draft picks in the NHL.)
- The Penguins have the most drafted on their own: 7.
- The Flyers have the most drafted by other teams: 10.
- The Lightning have the 2nd least (3) and are 2nd-to-last in the standings.
- The Red Wings have THE LEAST (2) and are 1st in the standings.
- The Blues have the most defenseman who are former 1st-round draft picks (5).
Surprising? Any conclusions?
SCIFIENTIST - Will share later. :)
D0ZER - You are correct.
JOE - I was thinking it comes down to Philly being a consistent winner and Pittsburgh being a consistent loser. I'll explain:
The Flyers' history of having winning records (making the playoffs) may contribute to them being good at getting free agent 1st-round picks to sign with them. (This also might speak of their reputation as an organization OR pre-CBA era, it could speak of how much money their club had to spend.)
The Pens' history of losing has gotten them a lot of high draft picks.
NO LIFE - Busts play a factor, certainly.
HALEY - Undrafted players stealing the show is a factor. For a team like Detroit though, it also could speak of great scouting (as mentioned on the site). Datsyuk & Zetterberg are both (very) late round picks and they're stealing the show.
LITY - That's such a simple explanation, no wonder I didn't think of it. LOL. I'm sure you do, but I don't remember any really great 1st round draft picks of theirs besides Stevie Y. They are extreeemely lucky with their later picks though, aren't they.

The Wings strength has been in their ability to find gems in the later rounds, right?
Confucious say 1st rounder can only under-achieve while late rounder can only over-achieve.
I wonder where each of the current top 20 point leaders were drafted? How about the year-end top ten (forwards and d-men) of the last ten years? Hmmm, project for a slow day
EDIT: Nothing like emphasizing a point that was made 5 hours ago!! Maybe I should do a better job of reading previous responses. LOL
I'll follow up my gaffe with a little trivia on this topic...which 1st rounder was one the Blues' five 1st rounders traded for?

The Islanders could be the poster child for trading 1st round picks. Since 1993: Bertuzzi, Redden, J.P. Dumont, Luongo, Eric Brewer, Tim Connoly, Taylor Pyatt, Raffi Torres, Robert Nillson, Ryan O'Marra, plus a few lesser knowns still in the NHL. Only Dipietro, Sean Bergenheim, and Kyle Okposo are with the team. In 2001 & 2007 they didn't have a 1st round pick.

Canes traded away their first round pick in the trade for Jordan Staal. The first guy they took was Philip Di Giuseppe from the U of Michigan, at 38th overall. I think he's two, maybe three or four years away. It depends on whether or not he plans on spending 4 years at the U of M or go pro after his junior season. Even then he will likely spend a year at the AHL before making the jump to the NHL.

Detroit has a reputation as a team that doesn't draft well. They have a great record in the 'luck' rounds (Picks 100+) but not in the 'earlier' rounds.

LITY is right about Detroit.
I had heard that about the Flyers and TB and knew it about the Pens.....it is interesting. I did not know Detroit had the least but I knew they drafted some good late rounders.

That Pennsylvania teams really know how to use the draft.
Erica-Excellent points.
