For those of you Christians who disregard the Old Testament .......?

For those of you Christians who disregard the Old Testament (even though Christ said it was forever binding),

I have gathered together a great law from the New Testament. Romans 1 :29-32

“Those filled with

unrighteousness,

fornication,

wickedness,

covetousness,

maliciousness;

envy,

murder,

debate,

deceit,

malignity;

whisperers,

backbiters,

hate for god,

proud,

boasters,

inventers of evil things,

disobedience to parents,

without understanding,

covenant breakers,

unnatural affection,

implacable or unmerciful nature:

"Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of DEATH”.

1. whom according to this list, are NOT worthy of death?

2. How many of us feel envy, wish to fornicate, boast or gossip?

3. How many Christians are guilty of debating?

Why every day some Christian is debating the word of god or his dogmas with me.

Update:

Debra M . BoC***

YOUR version of the Bible may not have "Debate" in the verse but as I have found at least 15 different versions debate stays in....

Update 2:

btw... Accusing me of taking the verse out of context and then quoting another verse out of context is hypocritical is it not?

    1) I think you can put me down for unrighteousness (Which kinda makes god/jesus sound like bill and ted - "You can't come into heaven unless your like, totally righteous dude!"), fornification (hmm fornication!),envy, debate, hate for god, proud, inventor of evil things, disobedience, without understanding (in general or of anything in particular?). So I'm pretty sure I'm well done for!

    2) Erm ... me!

    3) None of em. If it's a debate both sides have to raise valid points. The only 'proof' to their beliefs is a 2000 year old book that has followers that can't agree which translation is correct or of course this amazing 'faith' thing. The whole "I believe it's there, therefore it must be true" thing. How is that proof? Let me just try that -

    *closes eyes*

I BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A MILLION POUNDS IN £50 NOTES IN FRONT OF ME!?!

    *opens eyes*

    Didn't work!

    Dammit!

    1. Everyone is worthy of death, all Christians included.

    2. All of us feel those sinful desires to envy, fornicate and boast etc.

    3. All of the Apostles debated with people, verbally and in writing, but not in the bad sense of that text you quoted. They were not being contentious. They were tackling deceptive ideas and practical obstacles to people understanding the good news of what Christ had done. They were absolutely emphatic on the doctrine of sin and how only faith in what Christ did could save people from the consequence - death.

I trust you will accept these comments from a Christian who DOES believe the OT as much as she does the NT, in the spirit of love in which they are offered.

How about using something other than the KJV?

"They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, STRIFE, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them." - Romans 1 .29-32 English Standard Version

Notice that the word "debate" doesn't appear in modern versions. That is because the word has changed meaning since the KJV was translated. The modern equivalent is "strife", which is why I capitalized it in my quote. It came from a 13th century French word, "debattre", that meant "to fight". That is not the modern meaning at all.

Christians I know use the old testament as the foundation to understand where Jesus came from and the basis of the Christendom. But there are laws in the New Testament that replace some of those of the old testament. Christ fulfilled the prophecies of the old testament. Christians direct more of their efforts on spreading the Good News as Christ has directed us to do.

It's always nice to read a bit of Paul condemning himself. By writing such stuff, he puts himself on the list. Paul was a Pharisee and when it's Paul expressing his own opinions, his Pharisaic upbringing shows through. He makes a lot more sense when he's talking about what Jesus taught rather than about himself (preachers' syndrome).

Christians don't disregard the Old Testament. We regard it as the law and history of the Jewish people and that Jesus was the fulfilment of it. What Jesus said and did is infinitely more important than how old the Earth is or how far you can walk on the Sabbath. Calvin's error was to put aside much of Jesus's teaching and to use the Old Testament as an almanac.

Yes it's always best to remember the Bible wasn't written in English and therefore we are all reading translations. Translations are interpretations and can be vastly different from one another. After we read even one of these translations - we ourselves need to apply our own interpretations, and there are an infinite number of these. No one person in the whole world can say which interpretation is right and which is wrong.

Christians should not disregard any part of the scripture. I don't really think many do.

Debra M -- The scripture reference is there. Romans 1:29-32.

This just shows that we can't do it. The barrier is to big, and that is the whole point of all of it. Man has no way back apart from Christ. There is NOT ONE OF US who is worthy in fact.

And depth on the debate point is needed >>>>>whispers this. If you get my point.

  • "Debate" Scripture reference please?

    I see not in my Bible:Romans 1:

29 Being filled with all iniquity, malice, fornication, avarice, wickedness, full of envy, murder, contention, deceit, malignity, whisperers, 30 Detractors, hateful to God, contumelious, proud, haughty, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

26 "God delivered them up"... Not by being author of their sins, but by withdrawing his grace, and so permitting them, in punishment of their pride, to fall into those shameful sins.

31 Foolish, dissolute, without affection, without fidelity, without mercy. 32 Who, having known the justice of God, did not understand that they who do such things, are worthy of death; and not only they that do them, but they also that consent to them that do them.

Once again, you are taking a Bible verse out of context.
