what are they seeking? What is religion? Not what the dictionary says, but the understanding that each has of the word.

On my part it is curiosity. I have only asked about 4 people and that was because the topic of religion in general was brought up.

If there were no religions there would be a hell of a lot less fights thats for sure. It's a pointless way for people to assure themselves that they are going somewhere nice when they die and that they have protection from this magical being called God ( who never answered any of my prayers when I was a catholic, what was I thinking?!) It's a destructive thing religion & it should be erased completely.

I would say it's a belief system. I would ask if it is relevant to the question to see how it goes with their beliefs in general.

They're seeking to be a freak. And they succeed.

If what you're gonna ask next requires that, leave it alone.

I think that they are more interested in the person, how to approach them without offending their culture etc, than learning about the culture itself.

they are interested to see if they share a common interest in you. if it is a Christian asking, they may be wanting to know if you are a Christian,too/ that may be asked for various reasons//
