What are some commonly used drugs for bipolar disorder?

I've been treated for depression (unsuccessfully) for a long time, and I think I may actually have bipolar disorder.

I think that Lithium is often used, but I'm no expert.

lithium, lamictal, depakote, seroquel, abilify and tegretol are the most common mood stabilizers. Most are really anti-manic agents rather than mood stabilizers. Lamictal works better than the others for depression. All the above are approved for bipolar treatment by the FDA, I believe. Sometimes risperdal is used and some others, but the above are tried first. Lithium is the only one that reduces suicide, which about 15% of people with bipolar do die that way.

Ask the doctor on bipolarworld.net is an excellent resource. Dr. Phelps also has his own website. Overall, this is the best website I have found.

I was misdiagnosed as having depression for years, and it turned out I had bipolar as well. It took four doctors over the course of six years, but I finally got a good doctor who could help me. I currently take lithium, but you can also take depakote and a couple others. Lithium is a very tricky medication, though. Your blood levels have to be taken every so often to make sure the drug level is correctly in your system, and you can't drink alcohol, and lots of drugs counteract it. Ask your psychiatrist, or find a good one. Good luck!

I've been taking lithium for over 15 years, I drank alot of alcohol before then and I still drink (not as much, and yes my Dr. knows) even now. So far my liver is just fine, and the lithium is still working for me.

Lithium is most commonly used. There are other drugs used like Tegretol or Depakote which are not lithium based.
