Nuclear Power - Good or Bad?

Please don't post regarding your opinion. FACTS with references only please.

*note that I already know what the answer is but am curious to see what evidence can be found on both sides*

Update:

Btw I work with nuclear waste and can guarantee it is dealt with safely and appropriately. Otherwise, would I be able to write this question?

    Good and bad.

I used to be totally against because of the waste issue.

Now I am not, because of the affect green house gases is having on our environment.

While the waste won't become neutral for thousands of years, we simply do not have thousands of years to fix our emissions problems.

The waste issue can be dealt with rationally as technology advances.

I am all for fast tracking nuclear power plants world wide and having international cooperation for turning fusion reaction (clean) into a viable energy source, along with international cooperation in building viable alternatives to transportation that helps eliminate using fossil fuels.

The biggest negative at this point is terrorism. That is why those plants need to be protected in a military like setting, as unpalatable as that seems, it is really the only way.

Yes, I know you didn't ask for opinions, but here on YA, that is what is mostly about. I gave examples why, and my personal opinion.

Not bad. From what I've read, meltdowns like those at Chernobyl have been made virtually impossible with new technology. And scientists are working on actually recycling nuclear waste, though I have a feeling this won't meet with success for a long time.

Of course, I don't know how I'd feel about having the nuclear waste stored in my backyard.

    _______________

To person who said nuclear power is expensive: You're absolutely mistaken. In fact, it is the *cheapest* and most efficient source of power of *any and all* sources of power we have available today.

  • 1 decade ago

I say it is good. It is very efficient and reasonably clean compared to coal. It is also very safe. The only real nuclear accident was Chernobyl and it was the result of poor engineering, human error, and political arrogance.

MIT put out an excellent report on it as well. Link is below.

    New info:

I'm sorry, but burying nuclear waste in abandoned salt mines that are totally safe and can contain any leaks is expensive? Heck, those empty salt cavities are so leak-proof, the US government pumps in and stores bulk oil in them. I should also point out that radiation is a naturally occurring reality and unless you plan to go bathe in radioactive waste, you have nothing to worry about.

I would love to tell you, but if this is for your homework then I'm afraid you need to do some research on your own. Facts with references? I would love to include those and even properly cite all resources for you but 1.) asking for facts WITH REFERENCES is just plain damn lazy. Get off your stinkin half rotten bottom and find some references yourself. 2.) this kind of laziness disgusts me and you should be removed from the face of this planet. perhaps a nuclear related accident will do the job. 3.) "note that I already know what the answer is but am curious to see what evidence can be found from both sides"? oh yes I'm sure you know what the answer is already. you know the answer so well that you want facts with references. nice try. someone should give me facts about the use of bacteriological weapons during world war two please I have an essay due today. NOTE THAT I KNOW THE ANSWER BUT JUST CURIOUS TO SEE HOW OTHERS SPOONFEED ME WITH INFORMATION SO I CAN SIT AND LET MY A$$ GROW. GIMME A BREAK!

  • LOL! The question can only be answered with an opinion the way it is worded. You do not already know the "answer", it is an opinion. I'll answer the way I want to until you buy Yahoo! and make the rules.

Nuclear power is great if you can manage the byproducts efficiently, and if you can keep enriched uranium out of the hands of the bad guys.

Very good. Technology has overcome the potential hazards that caused problems at Chernobyl and New York.

  • d woz, what you said basically contadicted yourself because you obviously don't know anything about nuclear power and was lazy sitting ur fat buttocks on the sofa watching informmericals about dr. ho's neck lifting thing that seperates your head from your body.

If the true cost of nuclear power is factored in, i.e. the cost of monitoring and containing extremely toxic radioactive nuclear waste for thousands of years, then it is by far the most expensive energy source ever conceived.

yeah like how long does that pollution last? [oh not much just a half life of a million years]., have you ever heard of nimbys? they are people that say not in my back yard,. i wonder how may conservatives would want to live down wind from a nuke plant?., no seriously ., and after the nuke is spent do you think they would want it buried in their back yard? ,. yeah that's what i thought., i wonder how many plutonium atoms does it take to kill a person? [oh at least 1., but not more than 3,. so it takes 2 atoms of plutonium to kill a person and i wonder how many atoms are in a nuke plant? hmmmm?]
