In my experience those who like and use the phrase "shades of gray" find every two things "somewhat equal" :-)

"Shades of Grey" generally means, as the previous answerer noted, that you tend to think two things are just marginally different - two shades of the same color.
"Bittersweet" refers to something that makes you happy and sad at the same time. For example, people may consider moving to a new city a bittersweet experience - they are sad that they are leaving their old home and friends, but they are excited about starting a new beginning somewhere else.

The statements in themselves are nothing alike....
However it is possible to have one outcome, one situation that could be described accurately by using both statements....
