Is there an altar in your church?

For Protestants who reject Catholic concepts of the holiness of the altar, do you have an altar in your church? If so, what is the purpose of it? Why is that place more holy than the rest of the church building, or anywhere, for that matter?

No altar in the building where we meet, no.

The Bible says the church is the bodies of believers physically, not a building made with bricks and boards.

I belong to a lutheran church that is about 150 years old give or take a few years.

So it's built with a sanctuary, narathex, wood pews and of course an alter with Jesus on it.

We go to the alter to receive the eucharist and blessings. Little kids who haven't been confirmed receive the blessings. Everyone of any faith who has been confirmed in whatever church is welcome to receive the host and the wine ie the body and blood of Christ as he did in the Last Supper .

Some churches in the lutheran synods different from mine have their own faith traditions, but the evangelical lutheran church in canada churches do their services the same way and their churches are built pretty much in the same way.

I think it's more of the pentecostalists and evangelical christians who don't have crosses although that may not be true for them all either.

The church no matter what denomination is one foundation for all, many newer more born again denominations seem to forget this and think their particular faith tradition is the ONLY one , anyone who is a follower of Jesus Christ and God is a Christian, whether born again or not.

Well, I'm Catholic, but I'll answer anyway, yes, there is an altar in the church I attend. It's where the bread and wine are consecrated and become the Body and Blood of Christ. and no, I don't think that it's necessarily more holy than other places in the church, that would be the tabernacle, or wherever the Body is.

where I go to celebrate, there is a bible, square and compass on an altar. We meet with men of many faiths. There is always a prayer as with any important undertaking. Celebrate with other faiths folks this isn't football. no need to compete.A great question! no need for the thumbs down I see on some answers.

You are so right... the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

This idea that God led me to build this temple for him and so on.... simply ridiculous. God has the whole universe... why would God need a building???

    You are so right.

This resource explains how the body is the Real Temple... and it takes a person back to the Original Kingdom Gospel as well.

We don't have one in the church I attend now, but there was always one in the ones I attended growing up. It was more like the purpose of the altars put up in the OT to remind people of where God did something for his people. We used it as a place to gather for special prayer, and then remembering that time and place was to strengthen your faith that your prayer would be answered.

There is no altar in our church. Just a pulpit and a table for serving communion on. We do have altar calls- but it has nothing to do with an altar- is is just people coming to the front of the church to ask for prayer when they have made a spiritual decision.

In the OT altars were for offering scarifice. WHat sacrifices are you offering on your altar? We don't need to offer up sacrifice as Christ made the final, complete offering for sin- it is a completed act. We don't need to crucify Him again and again every time we have communion. COmmunion is just to remember what He already did.

No.... The building is just a place for those of The Faith to gather for fellowship and sharing of study of The Word and Will of God... And marry'ns and bury'ns... and the occasional pot-luck dinner... and other social activities compatible with sharing The Faith... the building is no more holy than any other...

There is an alter in the center of the circle that I use when I do ritual. But this serves as a place to hold things rather than for being a 'holy' place.
