I'm a single "older" woman who lives in a beautiful rural area with her 85 year old dad who leads a much more active and exciting life than she does! I have far too many hobbies and interests for my own good. I was a history teacher for many years, have traveled and lived in many countries, and am keenly interested in what's going on in the world. I am a devout Christian and the devoted mother of three grown children and have three little grandsons.

  • Spiritually speaking, how do I get rid of the dancing moms?

that Obama wants to go back to school? If they go back to school will they be replaced by Britney Spears wearing the old retired Florida man's hat?

  • But it was too late, Jesus had passed him by.?

Years ago, I remember reading some old religious books with cautionary tales of people who had heard the message of Christ, but had rejected it. On their deathbeds, these people called out to the Lord to save them, but they had had their chances back then and now it was too late "Jesus had passed them by."

I totally disagree with this theology, but but was wondering if anyone could identify a denomination that would believe in this "window of opportunity" theory. So sad.

  • Don't advertisers try to anticipate my possible embarrassment/sense of humor?

A commercial is on for a prescription drug to treat stomach acid called Acifex. If I had stomach acid, I'd hope it affected my stomach, but my a$$? Doesn't anyone screen these names before they go public?

    Spiritually speaking, I mean.

  • Don't the kids have homework tonight (spiritually speaking)?

The numbers of thumbs down on certain answers is a clear indication of not enough homework being given to the youngsters methinks. It's counter-productive to give thumbs-down to people who have a different opinion, when they should go to those who express themselves rudely or stupidly. And stupid doesn't mean not agreeing with you.

  • Anyone watched the Clinton-Obama forum at Messiah College on TV?

For Christians, how do you think these two candidates did answering questions we are often asked on R&S?

What gives a parent a right to curse their own child? God help this little one. Should a millstone be tied around the mother's neck?

  • Is there an altar in your church?

For Protestants who reject Catholic concepts of the holiness of the altar, do you have an altar in your church? If so, what is the purpose of it? Why is that place more holy than the rest of the church building, or anywhere, for that matter?

  • What is fundamentalism?

The word is thrown around somewhat carelessly today. The original meaning referred to the five fundamentals of Christian doctrine:

    * Inerrancy and inspiration of the Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16)

    * The virgin birth and the deity of Jesus (Isaiah 7:14)

    * The doctrine of substitutionary atonement through God's grace and human faith (Hebrews 9)

    * The bodily resurrection of Jesus (Matthew 28)

    * The authenticity of Christ's miracles and his Second Coming ((Matthew 8, Matthew 12, Luke 21)

The negative view of the term comes from those people who have gone off on tangents within and outside those basic ideas. Your intelligent and well thought-out opinions?

  • What is your response to this all-too-common viewpoint?

This is a recent question I saw. I thought it should be posted on "Military", so people in the military could respond to it.

Did you know that Iraqi is not the same as Muslim?

I'm just letting some of you on here know that they are two separate things... and that the media calls the enemy "Muslims", when we're really just in war with the Iraqis.

I mean, the insurgents there are just an uprising of Iraqi civilians and militia who lost their jobs in the process of deba'athing the country. The Iraqis really... don't have anything. So I don't blame them for killing our soldiers. I'm just ticked at the president and his congress for keeping them out there for no reason... letting innocent people on both sides of the fence die...

    Your opinions?

  • Any baby names in text-message spelling?

It's bound to happen sooner or later! With the prevalence of text-spelling among the younger set, how long will it be until we see children named using this spelling? What would be some good examples? Let's blame ourselves if this becomes the next craze!

  • Do you think anyone at YA actually reads a violation dispute?

I got a violation notice for the question I asked about what song you'd sit in a car to let finish. It seems I was chatting. I "disputed" it, but from past experience, I think some computer receives it and dumps it. What are your thoughts? (And please, no CHATTING! Phrase your answers in a strictly unchatty way!)

  • Have you checked your smoke alarm recently?

I live with my elderly parents. This week, I woke up at night choking and found the house filled with smoke. I quickly found the source, put out the fire and opened all the doors. Then I got my Dad up and we set up fans to clear the air. Because of the cold snap, Dad had put on the electric baseboard heaters. The dog's box was up against one and had charred right through 3/4 inch plywood. We checked the smoke alarm and found that the battery was dead. My parents sleep at the end of the house, so if they had been alone, a real fire might have done serious damage before they woke up. They might not have woken up! Check those batteries, and if you have elderly parents living alone, make sure their batteries are up to date.

  • What do your grandchildren call you?

I am going to visit my grandchildren soon and haven't seen them since they were infants. It's going to be strange to be called Grandma (or something else) for the first time!

going to make this a new and better year? Just go back and look at the list of questions in this category. Do you want to be part of a crowd who thinks this way, or do you want to find ways to get along with people? Be honest!

  • Which American actors/actresses do a good British accent?

British people, who do you think does a good job? Who is not so good/awful? Name the movie or TV show.

From the other end, Hugh Laurie on "House" does a great American accent. Peter Sellers was excellent.

  • Charlotte Mason Homeschooling?

If you use this method, could you tell me about your experiences? I have read some of her books and think the idea of using nature and good books to teach is right up my alley. I am a retired teacher and my children are thinking of having me homeschool their children in the future. I have looked at several programs and CM appeals to me.

Do you slow down at the Presbyterian crosswalks?

  • Remember the days before designer labels/brand name clothes?

When I was a high school teacher, kids would often ask me what brands kids wore when I was in high school. They were stunned when I said none!
