    A little late...but here:

Highly respected Confederate commander. He originally opposed the secession of Virginia, but rejected a request from President Lincoln to lead the North, saying that he would go with his home state. Over the course of the war Lee had many impressive victories.

Robert E Lee was the quintessential southern gentleman - born to an aristocratic Virginian family, top graduate at West Point, and a distinguished and talented military officer. Lee resigned his army commission when his home state seceded in 1861 to fight for the Confederacy. In 1865 Lee helped to orchestrate a conclusion to the Civil War and for the remainder of his days worked to educate the young and heal the wounds of sectionalism.

Hard to compress a man's life into a short paragraph, especially one as illustrious as R.E Lee

The quintessential southern gentleman, Robert Edward Lee was born into a famous aristocratic family in Northern Virginia. A gifted engineer, Lee graduated at the top of his class at the U.S military Academy at west point, and served with distinction in the Mexican War. When his home state seceded in 1861, Lee resigned his army commission to assume command of the Army of Northern Virginia, and and commanded the Confederate forces throughout the civil war.

Early in 1862 he was recalled to Richmond and made an advisor to the president. From this position he had some influence over military operations, especially those of Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley. When Joseph E. Johnston launched his attack at Seven Pines, Davis and Lee were taken by surprise and rode out to the field. In the confusion of the fight Johnston was badly wounded, and that night Davis instructed Lee to take command of what he renamed the Army of Northern Virginia.

Robert E. Lee was born into a famous Virginia family. He had distinguished career in the US Army starting as a cadet at West Point; continuing as a engineer in the West; service in the Mexican War; and Superintendent of West Point. At the start of the Civil War, he was asked to lead the Union Army but refused to take up arms against his neighbors; resigned from the Union Army and volunteered for Confederate service. After about a year of various staff and field assignments, he was picked to lead the Army of Northern Virginia which he commanded until April of 1865.

If you look at the early maps of the Mississippi River, you will see that they were surveyed by a young Lt. Robert E. Lee just shortly after he graduated from West Point.
