What can you tell me about the Outer Banks, NC?

I live in Virginia Beach (approx 90 miles north) but visit the Outer Banks about once a month...I have a good friend that lives down there. There really isn't all that much to do there, the beach/ocean is basically the main attraction.

If I had to pick, the two most famous attractions there would be the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the Wright Bros. Memorial. Other than that....basically just lots of sand which may not be too much different since you're coming from the desert.

I've never stayed in any hotels down there but most of them seem to be decent. If you're planning on staying in Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills/Nags Head then the nicest place to say would probably be the new Hilton

There are some decent places to eat...If you like NC style BBQ, then check out High Cotton BBQ or Sooeys BBQ. Some other good spots to eat would be Bobs Grill, Spankys Grille, Dirty ***** Crab House, Jolly Roger, Mama Kwans, Outer Banks Brewing Station and Sam and Omie's.

There are lots of souviener shops that most of the time have some pretty good deals...If you like mini-golf there are also a few nice places.

The weather in March/April could be hit or miss? The average highs could be anywhere from 55 degrees to 85 degrees with nightlows anywhere between 45 degrees and 65 degrees. However you should expect it to be somewhere between 65-75 during the day and around 50-55 at night. The water temps will still be pretty chilly....probably around 55-60 degrees, All the temps do depend on the wind direction and which part of the Outer Banks you visit...the more south you are....chances are the warmer the air/water will be.

March or April it could be really COLD still or warm, we have strange weather so bring a nice assortment. We always stay in or near Buxton which is where the CH Lighthouse is. You have to visit that and the Wright bro's museum. They have a nice place near Ocacroke where they have some of the wild horses. The whole island chain is very laid back and most parts are really sorta po-dunk (in a good way) Until you get to Kitty hawk you do not find much as far as chain stores etc. a LOT of Mom & pops which we like. We always go in thru Cedar Island ferry to Ocracoke and then up to Buxton. That ferry ride is about 2 hours but its beautiful....and then the short ferry over to Frisco from Ocracoke.

REMEMBER: If you are going to take the ferry anywhere there MAKE a reservation !!!!! You can look up the ferry system online and look at the schedules and get their phone #s.... VERY important because if it gets busy you will sit there for hours waiting.

I reccomend staying in Duck. We've stayed in Duck for years every summer and much prefer it to staying in Nags Head or Kitty Hawk. It's a little off the beaten path, not directly on the main drag of the Outer Banks, but still close enough to shopping, restaurants, etc. You can pretty much get anywhere on the Outer Banks within 20 mins or so. Duck also is both on the bay side as well on the ocean, so if you prefer a little "less" ocean you can opt to swim at the bay. The current is much easier on children. Hope this helps.
