Is it about time to pass a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution?

the National Debt of the United States is getting way out of control. The more we owe the more interest we have to pay and the harder it is to pay off.

Is it about time to put our foot down and say to Congress that we should not be spending money we do not have?

I don't normally like constitutional amendments that are based on what should be common sense.

It is hard to believe this all took place under a GOP regime.

    Time for change.

A lofty idea, but it will likely never happen because politicians have a huge incentive to spend money on subsidizing special interest groups. The special interest groups, in exchange, help finance the politician's re-election bids.

When it finally comes time to pay the piper, these politicians are either out of office, or they are dead. In either case, they can no longer be held accountable.

Thus--restraints on spending--would restrain their ability to get re-elected. It would be like voting yourself out of office.

Sure, we had something like a balanced budget under clinton-gingrich for a couple of years--the "pay-go" program, but look how long that lasted. Not very long.

Now dubya wants a 3.1 trillion dollar budget. Is this guy f***ing nuts? What about the 1 trillion dollars we already owe from the Iraq war?

To put 1,000,000,000,000 in perspective -- there are only hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy. A trillion is more than that. Thus, to call our spending "astronomical" would be an understatement.

Put our foot down? Look at your average american. They are up to their ears in debt. Their credit cards are maxed out, and they probably can't afford that car or house they presently live in.

You can't appeal to their sense of responsibility... They only want politicians who will spend on them now, to meet their present needs. Paying our past bills? How appealing is that? How many votes will that win?

Bush ran the budget out so far, five times that the government was on the verge of having no operating capital. Just think what this could have caused. The congress had little choice but to acquiesce to Bush's demands for more borrowing power.

And now - his new budget. lol

No, that's not necessary. Help elect Hillary Clinton to the White House. Everyone said it couldn't be done when Bill Clinton was President too. He did it. Bush may have made it insurmountable to achieve in a span of eight years, but I truly believe if anyone can do it Hillary Clinton can. Remember, the President doesn't work alone. It also matters who they can bring on board with them. If she would not be able to acheive it under her Presidency, I can guarantee you she would make one heluva dent in it and a make it a lot easier for the next President.

No! The US can't operate on a balanced budget. Let the grand kids worry about it.

Good luck getting that through the Senate, but I agree.
