Mohammed Cartoon controversy?
If you dont know what im talking about, it was the 12 mohammed cartoons running in a danish newspaper in 2005.
What were some economical effects on denmark following the cartoons? (boycotts etc.)
What did the government do about it?
(debates on free speech etc. and or changed laws)
What kind of protests were set up?
Im doing this for a research paper
my thesis is:
The Danish cartoon controversy has caused unprecendented economical problems for Denmark, a debate over free speech, and violent protests across the world.
Ive done most of the research but please if you know some GOOD and RELIABLE resources with information on any of my three points please post them.
also post your opinion if youd like :)

I think the Danes were relieved that one of their major exports, bacon would not be effected by this. Did Denmark really have major economic problems over this? I don't know that.

In order to answer this question, it is important to learn more about islam and mohamed.
The cartoons were actually around for a while, but it did not appear to bother anybody - there was no real fuss about it.
Unfortunately, some imams decided to use this incident to rouse the muslim world in chaos and violence.
The cartoons were done by Danish cartoonists who had no idea what deep trouble they were getting themselves into. This is because the cartoonists in their country frequently do this sort of thing toother religions, but it never seems to offend anybody.
In essense what the muslims found offensive , was the fact that mohamed was drawn - according to islam, this is not permitted.
Remember the cardinal sin in islam is to offend or insult the prophet. And this is punishable by the death sentence. All muslims are also required to rally to the aid of any other muslim who defends the honour of the prophet or islam if iether id insulted. Muslims are also required to force other muslims to assist them in this cause, if the "mild" muslims resist, then they may be also killed because they would also be described as islam's enemy.
Islam is made up of the koran and hadith. And mohamed is at it's core. If you take mohamed away, islam does not exist. All the instractions that muslims need to live are contained inthese two sources. Mohamed is also the perfect example for all muslim men. That is, they have to imitate his behaviour, actions and deeds, to the letter.
A good muslim is defined a someone who follows the koran and hadith to the letter. Non-mulsims may find the action of devout muslims disturbing, and may even refer to them as "radicals' or "fundamentalists". But in actual fact, they are the "good" muslims. The so-called "moderate" or "liberal" muslims are known as the bad (or stupid) muslims, because they pick and choose what they want from islam.
The koran and hadith clearly depict mohamed as a supreme, faultless individual. Hence he is regarded as the perfect example. Today, you will often find men and women burst into tears as they talk about mohamed.
For all muslims, islam is the very oxygen they breath. When you insult mohamed and islam, you cut off their oxygen supply..This is why they will fight to the death to preserve this honour.
Many muslims are wonderful people who are kind and do-gooders. But when the phophet, or islam is insulted, it's as if a trigger switch is activated in their minds. Once this is done, they react violently. A "mild" muslim who was a friend all your life, could suddenly become your mortal enemy . - this is the effect of islam on muslims in the world today - sad, but true.
The saddest part of this, is the fact that so many non-muslims are duped and decieved my muslims into thinking that islam is a religion of "peace", and that it is often misinterpreted or misunderstood. Islam is nothing more than a hoax..a lie. But it is such a good lie, and it is so bad, that it appears to be good.
Good luck with your studies. Remember to look at all the sources - especially the works of ex-muslims all over the world. They are brave souls who risk their lives when they leave islam. We do it for those who sacrificed their lives so that others may know the truth about islam
Most sincerely and much peace,
x

"The Danish cartoon controversy has caused unprecendented economical problems for Denmark"
and you base this on what, exactly? It is not true.
Source(s): And you should really include the years and years of Muhammed depictions in ISLAMIC art: [dammit, I forgot posting links doesn't work. Google for "muslim depictions of muhammed" and it will be the first link] Additionally, South Park had an earlier episode "Super Best Friends" featuring Muhammed, Jesus, Joseph Smith. Nobody was offended. - How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

The BBC News website looks at why the depictions have caused such offense.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/46748...
And I quote:
Chapter 21, verses 52-54 of the Koran read: "[Abraham] said to his father and his people: 'What are these images to whose worship you cleave?' They said: 'We found our fathers worshipping them.' He said: 'Certainly you have been, you and your fathers, in manifest error.'"
From this arises the Muslim belief that images can give rise to idolatry - that is to say an image, rather than the divine being it symbolises, can become the object of worship and veneration.
What does Islamic tradition say on the matter?
Islamic tradition or Hadith, the stories of the words and actions of Muhammad and his Companions, explicitly prohibits images of Allah, Muhammad and all the major prophets of the Christian and Jewish traditions.
More widely, Islamic tradition has discouraged the figurative depiction of living creatures, especially human beings. Islamic art has therefore tended to be abstract or decorative.
Shia Islamic tradition is far less strict on this ban. Reproductions of images of the Prophet, mainly produced in the 7th Century in Persian, can be found.
Why is the insult so deeply felt by some Muslims?
Of course, there is the prohibition on images of Muhammad.
But one cartoon, showing the Prophet wearing a turban shaped as a bomb with a burning fuse, extends the caricature of Muslims as terrorists to Muhammad.
In this image, Muslims see a depiction of Islam, its prophet and Muslims in general as terrorists.
This will certainly play into a widespread perception among Muslims across the world that many in the West harbour a hostility towards - or fear of - Islam and Muslims.

Don't forget the South Park episode that made fun of Family guy who wanted to show a picture of him ...
In the end Comedy Central wouldn't show his face either ...
