Am I being payed what I should?

I started a new job as a receptionist at an engineering firm back in September. About a month ago, they moved me up to an administrative assistant for the vice president. Obviously my job is much more involved and more difficult. When I started, I thought it was less than I should be getting paid but I really needed a job, so I took it. Now that I do so much more, I really feel like I should be paid more. So, what do you think people in my position should be paid, or if you are or ever have been an administrative assistant, what do/did you make(if you dont mind answering)? By the way I live in Ohio if that makes a difference. And if I am underpaid, how do I go about asking for a raise and when is the appropriate time to do that?

Depends on the size of the firm, and your experience. With the info you've given, we know about only the most recent 4 months of experience. Since you've moved up to admin assist to the VP, I'm guessing that either you have more than just 4 months of experiences or it's a smaller firm.

I've heard that newbies (just out of school) around here (Colorado) in that field, in that type of position earn between $15 and $18/hr.

With (let's take a guess) a year experience, I'd expect an average toward the top of that range- maybe $17-20/hr.....

    So $20/hr, times 40 hours/week, times 52 weeks/year...

Annual salary of $41k.... but that's just a guestimate.

To get a raise-- Look at what you do, what your responsibilities are. Do you supervise anyone? Compare what you currently do to what you did before. How does your pay compare to comparable positions in the area?

When you talk to the boss (whomever it may be), your goal is to show him how valuable you are to the company, and that it is in his/her best interest to pay you more... or provide more/better benefits....

    DO--

*Being assertive and confident in your request is important- YOU know what your work is worth, but does your boss?... He may simply not realize all that you do.

*Assume the sale (Maybe talk to a good sales person about how to do this.)- You know you deserve better pay, so there is no reason you shouldn't be getting it!

    DO NOT--

Whine/complain- sure, squeaky wheels get oiled... and then they get replaced ;)

My husband is just starting his own company-- he says that if an employee came to him asking for a raise, he would look at the individual's work- quality and efficiency. He'd look at their attendance and reliability.

Best time to actually do the asking--

About 10am-- Try Tuesday or Wednesday, NEVER on Monday. The reasons being- Mondays are always stressful, and hopefully, by 10am, the boss has gotten through all the messages, and is ready to take on the business of the day. He's away (coffee has kicked in, or whatever).

    Good luck!!

I made about $14.50 an hour as an administrative assistant. That was in Utah where wages are usually lower than Ohio. I would go onto www.monster.com or some similar site and search the salaries of comparable jobs. Then I would also search those sites for positive ways to ask for a raise. In some companies, raises are only considered at one specifically time annually so you might have to wait.

But since you were moved into a new position, I would think a new salary should have gone with it. Who specifically promoted you? Maybe you should speak with that person.

I forgot to add that I was an administrative assistant about 7 years ago so wages have probably gone up a little.

Source(s): What part of Ohio? That's where I grew up.

The receptionist at the engineering firm I worked at got paid $14.25/hr at the end of last year. She was the lowest paid person in the entire firm. She sorted mail and answered the phone. The admin. assistant to the vice president got paid $20.26 at the end of last year. She took care of parties and travel arrangements and typed a LOT. (I've seen better)

What a pain in the neck! Bank holiday and all. If this is your first payday from this firm they may have put your bank details into the computer wrong. Ask if you can have an advance out of petty cash. If this has been a consistent problem with your firm or other people haven't been paid as well then tell them that you're going to Citizens Advice about it with the view to getting ACAS involved with it.
