Does Homer Simpson have a good point, re: fire and brimstone Christianity?

God: Thou hast forsaken My Church!

Homer: [in fear] Uh, kind-of... b-but...

God: But what?!

Homer: I'm not a bad guy! I work hard, and I love my kids. So why should I spend half my Sunday hearing about how I'm going to Hell?

God: [pauses] Hmm... You've got a point there...

I laugh at God's response there, because Homer DOES make a good point. Do you agree?

What if we're worshiping the wrong god? We're just making the real one madder and madder </paraphrase>

    LOL! Uh...kind-of...b-but...

    BUT WHAT?

But...this is the same Homer Simpson that ate 64 slices of American Cheese in one sitting... used beer to alleviate the symptoms of a heart attack... concocted an illegal narcotic beverage... wrecked a space-mission while chasing potato chips in zero-gravity, and refused to share the secret of inner peace with women when questioned by his son: "NO! They are foreign DEVILS!" Ha ha ha ha ...

My point is this: Homer might SAY he works hard, and SAY he loves his kids, but in this cartoon series, his actions and his words don't match... not even close! His main ongoing problem is excessive self-indulgence, and he does not even remotely consider the merciless effect on his own health, his family, or anyone else, when he mindlessly gluts himself into oblivion. His answer to 'God' is a lie, and his God's reply only shows the gullibility and lack of true consideration of Homer's deity...

    Himself.

The Simpsons is a great and hilariously funny show... taken in the right perspective, that is.

Source(s): Instead of going to church, Homer might do better to go back to school, and take some health and safety classes. The teacher could make him a prime example of what NOT to do!
  • Homer makes an awesome point! That's why I haven't been to a church in a long time. I figure God is like the coolest thing ever and so anybody so cool is going to overlook some silly transgressions. I mean c'mon, God's a sport!

As a completely unrelated aside, I love how the Simpsons can poke fun at so many controversial subjects without reprisal...you would almost think it was a Canadian or British show.

However, Homer makes a very good point. Doesn't a higher power that creates and gives such gifts as free will appear to be self serving requiring people to then choose to worship and threatening damnation if we choose otherwise...

it depends on the timing of the scoring in the game. If the losing team scored first then which ever homerun gave the winning team the lead would technically be considered the "game winning homerun" even though im sure it didnt come in the final inning. the same goes for if the score was ever tied 1-1 the next home run again would have technically been counted as a game winning shot.

I go to church every Sunday (Evangelical-Charismatic) and I don't hear about going to hell.

I think anti-religion people exaggerate about this.

Believe me, going to church is not all about fire and brimstone, it is about loving the Lord, treating people right, and living with some dignity.

Family Guy, South Park, and the Simpsons all make good points like that on a regular basis. That's why I love those shows.

  • That is why I go to a church where the preacher talks about ways to improve our lifestyle to please God, how we can strengthen our relationship with God, and how we can act Christlike in our actions.

I do like another think Homer said, and I apply it to my calculus class - "Can we dumb it down a little?"

    Peace!

Anything Homer says is a good point, despite his intentions and disposition.

Source(s): I love the Simpsons. The only show I loved better is Futurama.
