Bathtub draining slowly - How do I get the drain open?

Bathtub has a twist-open drain plug - you twist the cover and it pops up. There is not a lever mechanism at the overflow opening, just the twist-and-lift kind of plug.

The tub drains slowly and has a sour smell from the drain.

How do I remove the plug mechanism to clean hair and yuck out of the top of the drain? My next step would be a snake, but I'd like to try the drain itself first.

snake it to try to get it to drain some. then add a drain cleaner that contains lye, and then rinse with plenty of hot water. some bleach poured down the drain will help eliminate this problem. about a cup every 2/3 weeks

This drain plug can be removed very easily, get a handyman to remove it for you. 90% of drains have to be cleaned through the overflow. Remove the overflow cover near the top of the tub and snake the line out. Also pour a cupfull of drain cleaner (safe for plastic) down the drain and wait a half hour then flush. You can get drain cleaner in a 99 cent store. Pour a half bottle of white vinegar down the drain, and flush out the next day. Do it again a week later and quaurterly. Good luck.

Many of those twist and pop drain plugs unscrew - use your hand, not a tool.

Use a drain cleaner that contains lye, like Red Devil - please read and follow the directions carefully, lye can be dangerous.

If you are in an old house, the original sand trap under the tub could be full. If that is the case, you will need the help of a qualified plumber.

Look for a set-screw on the twist part of the drain plug. Pouring castic chemicals into the drain could also get it on the tubs finish and ruin it.

2 types of cheapo tub drains, older style: remove chrome top,you will see a flat head screw slot, use screwdriver to remove, newer style; under widest part of stopper will be a phillips head screw, loosen screw and remove stopper, if you have a plunger, remove screw(s) from overflow, stuff wet cotton t-shirt into overflow pipe, add enough water to tub to cover base of plunger, plunge!

Use a plunger and try to pump it down.
