Meaning of "Neocon" ?
My friend is a huge Ron Paul supporter, I'm liberal (more socialist than democrat) and he called me a "neocon."
I thought "neocon" was a term for extreme conservatives, was I wrong? Not trying to start a left vs. right debate here, just second-guessing myself.
Based on the two answers I have so far, he is the neocon, not me (he JUST registered for the Republican party this year, for as long as I've known him he's been slightly liberal or politically apathetic).
Again, not trying to start a debate, I honestly have no problem with conservatives, but I do have a problem with idiots that belittle someone without knowing what they're saying.
And, based on answers I got after the first two, the term "neocon" is completely irrelevant haha.
Thank you to everyone for your answers.

A neo con is a new conservative. Ron Paul is a libertarian. Libertarians, conservatives, new conservatives, social conservatives, and fiscal conservatives all tend to belong to the Republican party.
Socialists, liberals, and other safety net folks tend to be in the Democratic party.
You might be labeled as liberal, but if you're socialist, then that's what you are.
I think your friend was just being insulting.

The neocons are the new conservatives....Ron Paul if anything is the last true conservative there is. Guys like Wolfowitz, William Kristol, Pearle, Cheney etc are neocons. "Neocons" believe that the United States should not be ashamed to use its unrivaled power – forcefully if necessary – to promote its values around the world. Some even speak of the need to cultivate a US empire. Neoconservatives believe modern threats facing the US can no longer be reliably contained and therefore must be prevented, sometimes through preemptive military action.
Most neocons believe that the US has allowed dangers to gather by not spending enough on defense and not confronting threats aggressively enough. One such threat, they contend, was Saddam Hussein and his pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. Since the 1991 Gulf War, neocons relentlessly advocated Mr. Hussein's ousting..
Most neocons share unwavering support for Israel, which they see as crucial to US military sufficiency in a volatile region. They also see Israel as a key outpost of democracy in a region ruled by despots. Believing that authoritarianism and theocracy have allowed anti-Americanism to flourish in the Middle East, neocons advocate the democratic transformation of the region, starting with Iraq. They also believe the US is unnecessarily hampered by multilateral institutions, which they do not trust to effectively neutralize threats to global security.
What are the roots of neoconservative beliefs?
The original neocons were a small group of mostly Jewish liberal intellectuals who, in the 1960s and 70s, grew disenchanted with what they saw as the American left's social excesses and reluctance to spend adequately on defense. Many of these neocons worked in the 1970s for Democratic Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson, a staunch anti-communist. By the 1980s, most neocons had become Republicans, finding in President Ronald Reagan an avenue for their aggressive approach of confronting the Soviet Union with bold rhetoric and steep hikes in military spending. After the Soviet Union's fall, the neocons decried what they saw as American complacency. In the 1990s, they warned of the dangers of reducing both America's defense spending and its role in the world.

There's a lot of debate over that word. It would mean "new conservative." Generally, traditional conservatives are non-interventionist in their foreign policy outlook and believe in small government, some even believe in a much smaller military. Traditonal conservatives charge that neocons are just as big government as liberals, but instead of social welfare, the neocons utilize more power and bigger government for foreign interventionism. Basically, a traditional conservative isn't all that concerned about American hegemony, neocons want to do whatever it takes, even if it means enlarging the government, in order to maintain American hegemony all over the world.

"Neocon" means neo-conservative.
As you correctly thought, it is a term used to describe extreme conservatives. The policies that they espouse are the type from the so-called "New American Century." In other words they are a type of conservatism that interpreted the end of the so-called "cold war" as a victory and an invitation to empire building. They are different from the Ron Paul type of libertarian conservative in that they form an alliance with the religious right in a kind of global "Manifest Destiny."
While libertarian conservatives tend to see very little role for government, the neocon conservatives engage in building large imperial structures while using the no-government rhetoric to justify the lack of basic services in the community.
