dads attending scan appointments?
My husbands boss is a complete w***er and won't let my hubby time off to attend our first scan. I thought that he had the right to go and by law he was allowed time off for such appointments. Im only 9 wks and having the scan early coz of stomach pains so im stressed already and this really isn't helping! Does anyone know the rights for a father?
thank you all for your advice!

I don't think he's entitled to it, but companies are strongly encouraged to allow fathers to attend antenatal appointments. The rights he has are in the direct gov website below:

Can he not take a days holiday?

I would figure a man could use personal days but my Man just said No it does depend on the Job! I guess your hubby should talk to his boss and see what he is allowed before any other situations arise! I make mine on Mon bc it's his one day off, I suggest planning them after or before his work hrs. My man also said for an ultrasound is not a good enough reason however next time if needed don't tell and say he had a personal emergency!! Becarful as you dont want him to lose his job. Good Luck and Good Thoughts your way!! It will be better and when you clear your 12th week you'll be less stressed. I would suggest when you set up your mid pregnancy U/S I would do it so he can attend bc that is the best one their moving and waving and maybe even see what parts your baby has!! For rights I think attending the birth is all or thats what I'm being told, other time off is discussed and approved by MR W***er.

He has the right for paternity leave but no law states that he is legally allowed to take time off work for your doctor appointments. Your husbands boss does sound very uncaring however not much your husband can do about it if he is not allowed the time off.

I'm in a similar position and I'm finding that as the father I have absolutely no rights at all apart from 2 wks off after the birth.
(also, as my partner and I are not married, though we have been together for over 8 yrs, it may even get tricky when and if I need to give consent for anything just because we don't share a surname)

there is such a thing as paternity leave, where the father can take two weeks of after the birth to help out, but if his boss is saying no, the only alternative is to tak a days paid holiday perhaps?

There is no law stating he must be given time to attend your appointments. The law is only after the baby is born he can take time off. Sorry maybe you can find some one else to attend your appointment and support you.

Well, I don't know the work rights and lawsf for fathers, but if he has vacation time and personal time or even willing to take time off without pay, then he should be allow to do so. And it's definitely wrong for a company to stop an employee to use his time off. It doesn't matter what he wants to use it for. If he has the time, he definitely has the rights to use it whenever.
Congratuations on your pregnancy and good luck!

I highly doubt that there is a law that says a man has to be allowed to go to his wife's doctor's appointment. The boss is a jerk, but I don't think it's illegal for him to tell him he can't have the time off.
Doesn't he have any vacation days or personal days he can use?
