Anybody else angry that Netflix chose Blu-Ray over HD DVD today?
I guess I bet on the wrong pony when I bought an HD DVD player. What are your thoughts?

Holy smokes, it was upsetting. I actually called them today to say, WHAT?!? I know there are people who support Blu-ray over HD-DVD, and vice versa.
I did my own testing before I committed, and HD-DVD was a better picture, and Blu-ray had better menus and extra features. First and foremost, it is the picture that matters to me, not the menus.
I think Sony has done a lot of pocket lining on this with the studios. Blu-ray has yet to make a penny for them, and they are quite a ways in the red with it. I thought for sure that Toshiba's recent reduction in all of their HD-DVD players was going to ensure that the market for them would rebound from the Warner Bros. announcement last month. Netflix disagrees.
You know what, though? I don't know the number of HD-DVD titles that have been produced, but if it really is on its way out, there is going to be a fire sale on them in a few months. It will be a nice opportunity to purchase them and build a collection.
I refuse to buy a Blu-ray player. I don't play video games, so a PS3 is out of the question. I'm going to settle on the HD-DVD player's up-conversion of DVDs. Last I checked, Blu-ray still has a microscopic market share compared to standard definition DVDs.

Frankly, we should all know that The whole HD craze, whether it's Blu Ray or HD DVD, is only there for all the major studios to make even more money on you than they have already. This has nothing to with one being better quality than the other. Its about Money, Moola, Cash, Profit! They both look fantastic! But so does a DVD... unless you own a 45in LCD screen. Think of it this way people; Lets say you are a Film collector who owns 300 DVD's? Well now you own all your favorite movies, and there's no reason for you to buy any more except for the occasional new film that strike you as a classic keeper. So the studios have lost you as a client. And what would be their best way to gain you back? How about tell you, "Your current Format is old and crappy and basically unwatchable if you're a 'real film buff'. So buy this new HD Format!". But how can we get people to buy these new DVD's? the studios ask. How about selling 48 inch TV's for a price that everyone can pay so there current Collection looks like crap? Booya! Phase 1. We've seen it before with Beta and VHS, VHS and DVD. And now DVD to HD. The only difference between Bluray and HD DVD is who will be the company that gets to milk you for all your worth, and in this case the winner seems to be Sony. Just wait for it. The next move, everyone will need to purchase an HD cable terminal to get a nice resolution for their football and hockey games/Wife Swap. Stay with the 30 in television and keep your DVD's! Why do we need to see the nose hairs on Marlon Brando's face anyways? It's story, direction, production and acting that make a movie great. Don't buy in to this crap.

Yes, you bet the wrong pony. The announcement right before CES that Warner Brothers was pulling out of the HD format sort of sealed the deal. Now it's only a matter of time before the other studios go Blu-Ray.
And no, I'm not upset that Netflix went with Blu-Ray. I don't use either HD format yet, but when I do, I want the one I know will be around.

Im waiting for the "war" to finish and the people finally choose a winner so i can buy the player. I was hoping for HD-DVD to win, but Blu ray its doing better.... At least HD-DVD still have the p0rn industry in their side... thats like winning half the war

Very. That's the main reason I signed up with Netflix. They seem to be one of the few that actually carries HD DVD anymore....until yesterday anyway. Oh well.....aren't they suppose to release their own version of Apple TV sometime this year? I guess it won't really matter then, since you will be able to download HD movies directly to your HDTV. No blu-ray or hd dvd needed. :)

no cuz blu ray is much better and will be around longer than hd dvds, and ps3 is better than xbox

Blu-Ray is a superior format in every aspect. I'm glad to see that being established early in the format wars.

well... blu-ray is still high def, its just a differnt format than HD dvds...
plus all the players are cheap, so it's not that big of a deal.
