Did Peter REALLY believe that the end of ALL THINGS was at hand in the first century?
1 Pet. 4.7 - "The end of all things is near."
Keep in mind that this was written in the 1st century. Well, Christian? Do you believe that when this passage was written, that the end of all things was near? If you don't, you deny the Bible. If you do, you deny the evidence of your own eyes.
So which is it?
.
Yes, I know that according to the Bible, to the "Lord" a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day,. However, this letter was not written to the "Lord". It was written to people, so clearly, the author meant it to be understood in human terms.

DougLawrence - Yours is the only answer from a Christian that makes any sense at all. However, Peter did not write that the end of all things for Jerusalem was at hand. He wrote that the end of all things was at hand. To be sure, that would include Jerusalem, but I see nothing in the context that would demand that it be limited to Jerusalem.

I'm re-responding to an answer... god's day is 1000 years or some crap.
But MAN WROTE the bible, I realize that you will say that it was "god inspired" or whatever... but it just makes no sense that god, knowing how imperfect we are, would expect us to put all of these things together and understand the meaning behind everything he said. There's just way too many contradictions through out the entire book to give any one verse credit in my eyes.
What makes people think that god likes them anyway? Has he proven that lately?

There's no doubt that "the end of all things" came for Jerusalem and the old Temple Worship System, in the late summer of 70 AD, while St. Peter's "end" came sometime between 64 and 68 AD, at the hands of Nero.
St. Peter was absolutely correct on both counts.
How about you?

The early Christians certainly believed the end was just days away and they got annoyed as the years passed by and nothing happened. Paul was forced to address this problem in his letters.
So if the earliest Christians (some of whom may have even met Jesus) were taught that the end was only days away, then we can be sure that modern Christians are simply making excuses for its non-arrival.

Yes Peter believes in the end of all things is at hand. Is He not speaking spiritually?
Thats why the pharises and scribes hated such education to the people. Who are they to predict the future?
Its not in the end of this world its just a beginning of their new faith. Which is the risen Christ, the message is to believed in Christ and follow Him.
I get the whole context of the story to understand things that been said is not intellectually but more on spritually.
Repent and be saved, is also the one message they emphasised, hope we get the message accross.

munkee think "near" is relative term. USGS say earth over 4 billion years old so what is few thousand years give or take? To be sure munkee think you have to ask Peter.

The end of all things is near...for each of us...we will not live for 1000 years-so maybe our end is tommorrow or Friday or 2009...but for each of us the end is near. That's why we need to be prepared always.

With God a thousand years is as a day. You forgot the passage on scoffers.
2 Peter 3:2-4 (New King James Version)
3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming?

I am sure he still does.
It was Peter who told us that one day was as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day to the Lord.
"But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. "
