Do your feet smell because you took your shoes off or do your shoes smell because you took them off your feet?

So, which is it?

Your feet smell because you wore shoes... 'foot odor' should really be called 'shoe odor' because it's not the sweat itself that smells so strong, it's a substance created by bacteria breaking down the sweat in anaerobe circumstances (with lack of oxygen). This happens in a closed shoe -or even a sandal with synthetic straps/sole that traps enough sweat where it can't evaporate. On the bare foot, the sweat just dries up without the smell, even on a hot day there's no foot odor if you're barefoot from the last time you washed your feet. Unless you have hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) or your diet is off so your sweat itself is more 'whiffy' :P, you need both the shoes and the feet sweating inside them to create the smell.

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which a person sweats excessively and unpredictably. People with hyperhidrosis may sweat even when the temperature is cool or when they are at rest. Sweating helps the body stay cool. In most cases, it is perfectly natural. People sweat more in warm temperatures, when they exercise, or in response to situations that make them nervous, angry, embarrassed, or afraid.

Excessive sweating occurs without such triggers. Persons with hyperhidrosis appear to have overactive sweat glands. The uncontrollable sweating can lead to significant discomfort, both physical and emotional. When excessive sweating affects the hands, feet, and armpits, it is called primary or focal hyperhidrosis. In most cases, no cause can be found. It seems to run in families.

If the sweating occurs as a result of another medical condition, it is called secondary hyperhidrosis. The sweating may be all over the body or it may be in one area.

In both cases you'll find on this site some good tips to solve your problem: http://hyperhidrosis.toptips.org/

That's kind of a dumb question. Your feet sweat, and sweat has bacteria in it and it get smelly. If your feet sweat while you are wearing shoes, then your shoes will become smelly. Sometimes, if you have enough stinky bacteria in your shoes, you can simply put them on and the shoes will make your feet stink. If this seems to be the case, then it is time for new shoes! Might I suggest a pair of odor eaters for the new ones as well?
