My three year old is going to have his tonsils and adnoids out in two weeks. What should I expect?

I'm really curious how young children usually recover from this? How long it takes, etc. I read all the pamphlettes from the doctors office, I'd like to hear from people who have children who have actually went through this, please.

My 3 yo son had his adenoids out a couple months ago due to sleep apnea. He recovered very well. They'll tell you that he can't eat anything after 9pm the night before surgery, he can drink water up to I think 3 hours before the surgery, none after because many people who are put under anesthesia vomit. You don't want him to choke on his vomit, they'd rather have him dry heave. After surgery he may sound a little strange but most of the time he'll sound back to normal in a couple weeks. He can only be on a soft diet for the first few days and slowly give him other foods, no chips or rigid edged food for 2 weeks and no physical activity for two weeks, so as not to induce bleeding. They also recommend that you don't give him anything red. It will be hard to distinguish between the drink and blood. My sons surgery went great but it was very traumatizing for me, as I'm sure it was for him too. I was just so afraid something would go wrong. I really hope your sons surgery goes well. Good luck.

i don't know where you live but where i live they don't use scalpols(sp?) anymore they use lazers and most of the kids are up and about and talking the same day. My oldest son had the 'triple threat' surgery, tonsils, adenoids and tubes in the ears and he was fine in 2 days and was talking no problem.

remember each kid revovers differently and even though it was easy for my son doesn't mean it will be for yours, just make sure you are stocked up on popsicles. I found the hardest part was right after the surgery because they give the kids morphine for the pain and the morphine gives them the feeling they are going to fall, i literally had to wrap my son head to toe in a blanket to get him into the car cause he was so afraid he was gonna fall off the bed and get hurt.

whatever you do don't cry when they wheel him into the OR that will make him more nervous as i found out the hard way and as hard as it will be for you don't let him see you stressed after the surgery it can make the recovery process longer and harder.

Good Luck and i hope everything goes well.

Know the asteroid wellhead tonsil stones them for many years and it's been title not eventually.

Best decision I've ever made! I was shocked by the way of getting out the stones out. It was so easy, but more importantly, painless. I really liked the little trick he had for preventing gag reflex. He have one happy customer here.

I had in done when I was 15 and my daughter when she was 4.It usually takes about 2 wks to recover. It will be very hard to swallow for awhile.I found smashed bannans to work well after a couple of days.Ice-cream works well but not at first.Try apple sauce.Make sure you give plenty of liquids to keep the throat wet.

  • The recovery doesnt take all that long. Possibly a week, maybe a few days more. Depends on their age really. They wont be able to swallow for a while, so you'll have to be careful of that, and by my experience, make sure that your there when they fall asleep, and when they wake up. For comfort reasons, cuz the child might panic.

I had both done when I was 4 and I don't remember anything about it, so I'm sure it wasn't very traumatic. He will be sleeping at the time and won't feel them doing it at all. Expect popsicles. Lots of them. Just pamper him. They say the older you get the worse it is, and he is very young. He should be okay.
