About Black Mormons before 1978?

Before 1978, were Black Mormons allowed to go to Heaven? I was watching a program on PBS about the Mormons last night. Before 1978 Blacks could not be of the Mormon priesthood, and that indicated that they could not be truly saved. Why were Blacks not allowed this until 1978? Why did this change in 1978?

www.blacklds.org to learn the truth about blacks and the priesthood.

Blacks were allowed to have the priesthood and some did - but like most people during that time period they saw black in a different light. Although blacks could have the priesthood most bishops didn't want to give it to them. In 1978 the prophet said skin color shouldn't and doesn't matter and that all worthy men should get the priesthood.

I watched it too and some of the stuff was wrong.

Only God can answer your question about Heaven- I have no idea about that.

This rule changed in 1978 when the prophet Spencer W. Kimball received a revelation from God saying that all worthy men were eligible for the priesthood.

What I always wonder is why everybody focuses on this issue so heavily. Prior to this time Most congregations in the country were segregated. Most churches were white only or black only- but rarely both. The LDS church NEVER segregated our congregations. Really that puts us far ahead of the curve in that matter. Nobody ever seems to care that other religions segregated their congregations. I'm not trying to bash other faiths- just pointing out the inconsistencies in the criticism.

Also just beware of the PBS special. I watched it the first time around and it was ok. It was very obviously done with an bias against the church. Most of the information was correct, but they liked to portray it in a bad light. Some information was completely false.

In the Old testament blacks couldn't hold the priesthood either. Does this make all Christians racist? In fact only Levits could....does this mean God hated everyone that wasn't a levite?

    No.

The priesthood is how God administers his church on earth. He's always been selective about who has it and who doesn't. If you don't have the priesthood, it doesn't mean you're not going to heaven.

God has his reasons. The prophet prayed to the Lord about this and the Lord indicated that now was the time for all worthy men to be able to hold the preisthood.

    Want to know why....ask God.

My guess is that in 1830 the world wasn't ready for a church that had black priests, black missionaries, black leaders. The world wasn't ready for it in 1950 either. Even in 1978 there were a lot of racist people that condemned the church for this change of policy.

This is just my guess. It was God's decision...ask him.

Members yes...but no PREISTHOOD until 1978!

That means they were not going to the highest level of mormon heaven, the celestial kingdom!

But times they were a changing!!

So "POOF" the prophet at the time said that GOD changed his mind and blacks were allowed the mormon preisthood!!

man on a mission - Sorry, that is not true. The priesthood did not accept black men into the priesthood until "God" changed his mind in 1978. In 1967 the mother two black boys, (adopted from birth) were given special permission to be sealed to their parents in the Temple. After meetings with the Elders of the Church, and a face to face meeting with the Prophet at that time, she was given permission for them to be sealed. However, the Prophet told her that she should realize that they could not go into the after-life with her. They were sealed to the Parents in 1967 and made history in the Mormon Church because of it. The day after the sealing, she left the Church. She had made her point.

Yes, that woman was me. I have a letter signed by the Secretary to the First Presidency,. to prove what is stated above,. is the truth. HOWEVER, I must state that I have no bitterness towards to people of the Mormon Church. I feel that the greater percentage of them are wonderful people. I left because I personally, could never accept that God would never make the ruling, about "*****'s" (as they were called then, and as mentioned in their letter to me) and that God would never change his mind. We are all free to make our own choices in life, and I made mine. That does not make members of the CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS any less in their beliefs, than me. I do not judge and will not condemn others for their choices.

    Saved from what?

All men are saved by the atonement of Jesus Christ.

Before 1978 blacks couldn't marry into the celestial marriage in to the top degree in the celestial kingdom.

They can now post homiously. Baptism for the dead, and sealings for time and eternity.

Mormons have had some mistaken ideas about black people in the past, but Mormons have never taught that black people could not go to heaven. Here's some background:

Most churches have a past history of discrimination (Catholics discriminated against Jews and Muslims in the middle ages, southern Protestants discriminated against African Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries, some Muslims have discriminated against "infidels" in recent years, etc). Unfortunately, in the past (before I was born), Mormons taught some of the same things about blacks that Southern Protestants taught (Curse of Cain/Ham, etc) and so did not allow blacks to hold leadership positions in the church. Unlike Southern Protestants, however, Mormons never segragated their congregations and always taught that blacks could go to heaven.

However, all that changed decades ago. Modern Mormonism is very much opposed to discrimination of any kind. Ironically, many who discriminate against us (professional anti-Mormons) hypocritically accuse us of being discriminators!

The Mormon Church is not a racist church. I'm Mormon, and my wife is black. We were married in a Mormon temple, where the officiator told us that God approved of our marriage. My wife is treated well at church, as are the other African American members of our congregation. I've had a black bishop in several different Mormon congregations of which I've been a member.

Many anti-Mormons, however, intentionally misrepresent Mormon teachings in an attempt to discredit Mormonism. I've written about this type of discrimination on my site at http://www.allaboutmormons.com/brief_critique_anti... . Pay careful attention to the video at http://www.allaboutmormons.com/ENG_Video62.php .

Because the LDS are racist, obviously!!!!!!!!!! They changed w/ the times like everybody else. People grow up.Not only that. But they were under pressure to change. If the church wants something they must change. They wanted statehood. So, they had to give up polygamy in exchange.Poof! It was gone.

I don't see to many becoming "white and delightsome" either.

Which also leads me to believe, if they aren't white, they are not "delightsome"?
