Redfish & Pompano Rigs?
Going surf fishing in the gulf in about a month. Anybody have any suggestions for Redfish and/or Pompano rigs?

I would set up with a fish-finder rig! You can use 2 to 3' length of 10 t0 30lb mono or flourocarbon leader with an 1/0 to 5/0 livebait hook.Use a 3 way swivel tie tag end to one and your leadered hook section to other! On the tag end of the fishing line slide a place a pyramid sinker (at least 1 to a 4 oz. if needed) Depending on size of bait, current and waves, the sinker weight might need to be increased or decreased. For just pomps I would tend to use a small feather jig or sand flea rig "stlye like a carolina" rig but use a small pyrimid or no roll sinker in 1/2 to 1oz size with a L197 circle or 1 to a 5/0 gamakatzu live bait hook! Also put a few glass beads in front of hook may help!

INGUN nailed it!
Depending on WHERE your going in the Gulf, you might also have some good luck using 1/4-1/2 OZ Jigs/Berkley Power Grubs or Texas-Rigged Saltwater Jerk-baits.
Pomps have "eagle eyes". Def go with 10-12LB flurocarbon leaders and the smallest possible weight!
It's important to find "moving tidal influence" and "differences" in bottom-structure if you plan to hit a beach in the Gulf and do well. A "run-out" or sandbar with a drop-off into deeper water would be a primo place to investigate.
Expect very little action on "just any 'ole Beach". You MUST "do your homework" and investigate good spots to fish or your gonna be stuck in "Catfish Land"!
If I were you, I would find an inlet, bridge, or jetty to fish! Fishing these areas will increase your odds of catching something decent by 50%!
Good luck!

You won't catch many big reds in the surf, better to fish for them in the mangroves with medium sized live shrimp. But if your bent on wade fishing, go out to waist deep and cast out past the break, I still recommend live shrimp. Also the Pompano is just gonna get tangled.

I agree with Kemo. He hit the nail on the head. You won't catch that many reds in the surf..
Luck to ya!
