    They are both articles (adjectives); however a could be used universally-referring to any and all, whereas the man may refer to one particular person.

    A man may be anybody. I am a man.

    "The man" is a phrase with multiple meanings. Here are a couple of examples:

    "You knocked him out cold. You're the man, dude!"

    (i.e. to express admiration for someone)

    "I work a dead end 9-5 job just to please The Man."

    (here The Man is anybody that holds authority over others - a general concept rather than a specific person)

    The man is for a specific person ie God, ur boss, president of america etc

    "A" something means one or a general statement.

    "The" something means like THE top person. As in the one and only.
