I believe your son is going to get a lots of toys during his birthday party.
How about a piggy bank that makes music whenever he put a coin in it? This might help him to learn the concept of saving at a younger age.

My son is turning two in April. Besides the normal birthday goodies (cake, balloons, etc) I got him a tricycle. It is one that has a handle on the back so I can steer it for him while he pedals. I am sure he will LOVE it! It was about $50 at target. My family has talked about getting him one of those toddler basketball hoops. He would like that too. Cars and trucks are a must, but don't get ones that are small or have small parts that can come off.

Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends! There are all kinds of different tracks and cars and sets you can get-and this is a long term kind of thing. My sons love it, and even my 7 year old nephew still plays with his. One piece of advice-decide on what kind of track you want-grey plastic, wooden, or blue for the battery operated ones. Make sure everyone knows and stick with it, or you're going to end up with like 3 different Thomas sets that won't connect to each other. To get your son into it, maybe get some Thomas movies or books-you can get anything with Thomas on it, trust me you'll never run short of ideas for adding to his collection!

Buy him a Tonka Truck! They are one of the most sturdiest toys made. I mean one of the big ones that is about 18 inches long and 8 inches wide. He can haul things in it and what not!

Maybe a ride-on firetruck or car that he can push? Our son has one and he loves both riding on it and getting behind it and pushing it.
