Anyone else letting their dark hair go gray?

I started going gray in my early 20's, started coloring it in my late 30's, and now at 51 I am considering going natural, which is about 75% gray. My natural (and dyed) color is dark brown, like a semi-sweet chocolate brown. Anyone done this, and how did you transition it so you didn't look like a skunk??

Update:

I forgot to mention my hair is very long.

Update 2:

Great answer LTD, and if I mess this up, I'll be wearing a turban like your avatar. Ha!

One of my teachers has gray and black hair. The top part of it turned gray while the bottom half is still black. I think that it is absolutely beautiful!

We have been living parallel lives, it seems. I, too, started going gray in my 20's (and I am now 49)..I colored my hair almost continuously since then until a few months ago.

I went from blonde to red...back to blonde...

My natural color is a chestnut brown...

I am now letting it go natural...and I love it...I am about the same % of gray you are..

When I decided to "transition" I had shoulder-length blonde hair..to transition, I had it cut VERY short and an auburn glaze-color out on...no roots to see (no "skunk" line!)...gray has gradually grown in...looks really good...(didn't think it really would..but hubby kept after me to see my "natural" color!)...

I have been surprised at how pretty it actually is...

If I was going gray so young, I probably would dye it. However, at a more advanced age, I'd want to be natural. I'd also cut it; short, gray hair can be very stylish. Long gray hair tends to make you look older.

I also color my hair only i use the 6 week one where it

slowly fades out, so i think if you use the color for 6 to 8 weeks and as it fades your hair is growing and keep cutting it off and re coloring it until you are all grey.. It shouldn't take that long.. Good luck

That's a good question. I'd consult with a good colorist at a salon. I'm thinking they would suggest switching to semi-permanent color for the transition.

if you care what other people think of you then keep dieing it. if you think it looks better gray then stop dieing it. do whatever you like better!

you could maybe paint it black. or maybe you are thinking to much that white hair is tuning into much
