I'm 51 years old, single, have two sons in college, and like answering trivia questions on Yahoo to pass my time. I've learned a lot here, too. Lots of very bright folks on here. I like progressive metal music, mostly neoclassical, progressive rock (Foo mostly), love to read (fantasy only), and I make my own jewelry. Nice to meet you. God bless you.

  • Should I get my beagle a playmate?

I have a four year old rescued beagle. She is VERY submissive and fearful of pretty much everything that she does not have constant contact with. She also gets depressed every time she sees me getting ready to leave the house. I have read that beagles are very social dogs and should not be left alone if possible. But I am single and live alone, so she must be home by herself all day every day. She has gained a lot of weight from just laying around, so I wondered if it would be beneficial to HER to have another dog around. My instincts say yes, but she is such a challenge just by herself that I am hesitant. I have a doggie door that leads into a large fenced yard, so she has free reign of house and yard both. Then there's the money issue. Twice as much heartworm meds, twice as much flea prevention, twice as much food, twice as much for vet visits, etc. And I'm pretty sure two dogs are too much for me to handle when walking. I'm 54 and not exactly a strapping youth. What are your thoughts? And thanks.

  • Where can I find unpainted beads and pendants that are ready to paint?

I can find beads that need to be glazed and/or fired, but I need them ready to paint. I don't want to invest in a kiln and other supplies, I only want to paint. In particular I am looking for cubes, rounds, and round/square flat-type pendants with bails molded into them. Any ideas would be appreciated. I have tried every search term I can think of and I am coming up empty. Thanks, everyone!

  • Can I get streaming TV with satellite service and cable internet?

I've been reading up on devices like Roku that allow you to connect wirelessly to your internet connection (yes, I have that already) and watch streaming TV shows and movies. However, I am confused; I have cable internet, but my TV is satellite. Is that possible? My TV is an old CRT model; however I do have the yellow/red/white cable ports in back. I'm not necessarily talking about just the Roku choice, but ANY type of device that allows me to get TV shows and movies from the internet on my satellite-service CRT TV. What say you?

  • Banana clips all break at the hinge when I put them in my very thick hair; need help finding heavy duty ones..?

I've purchased dozens of large capacity thick plastic banana clips (not jaw clips or butterfly clips) to hold up my thick heavy hair, but every one of them has broken at the hinge area, most of them first time I ever tried to use them. I have been all over the 'net looking for heavy duty metal ones, but have found nothing. I cannot be the only person who needs these; anyone know a place that sells them? I'm not buying any more of the plastic ones, it's useless. Thanks!!!

  • Privacy filter; what's the trick to it?

Not sure if this belongs in security or not. Was just given a privacy filter for my desktop screen. It fits but won't "stick." No instructions came with it. It just fits in the opening of the screen, there are no clips. Is there a trick to it? I thought that sliding it on might create some type of static that would hold it in place, but no such luck. Right now I have tape holding it on, but I am sure that's not right. Surely something is supposed to hold it in place. It's just a flat thin piece of plastic with the privacy screen embedded in it, no clips, no holes, no adhesive, nothing. Same as sticking a piece of paper to your screen.

  • Why don't we microchip our possessions like our pets so they can be traced if stolen?

Makes no sense to me why the industry isn't selling these to consumers to put inside their expensive TV's, music players, cell phones, etc., so they can be traced if stolen. What a huge industry, and the police would be able to track the items and catch the bad guys, too. Why isn't this being done? I just had some stuff stolen from me; since microchips are tiny, it would have been no problem to plant one on the goods and let the police go get the thief. I can't believe no one is doing this.................

  • What's an RCA splitter?

I just got satellite TV and in order to use my DVD player, I now have to unplug the red, white, and yellow wires from my satellite receiver and plug them into the DVD player, then move them back to watch TV. The install tech said I needed an RCA splitter to make them both work without having to do that, but when I search that on the 'net, I get a zillion different types. I have no idea what to buy. Anyone have links to exactly what I might need? I have a seven year old analog TV with NO plans to upgrade to LCD any time soon; the picture is great with satellite. Thank you.

  • Just curious; what year did PC mfgs start incorporating CD burners into PC's for home use?

My friend has a very old PC and she believes it has a CD burner, but I'm dubious. She is very UN-tech. So that led to my curiosity being peaked.

  • What is the benefit, if any, of buying a lawn mower with hydrostatic tranny?

I had one before and did not like it; if it stalled, you had to leave it where it stood because you could not push it. So what is the big deal about hydrostatic? Is it really a good thing rather than conventional tranny? I'm in the market for a new lawn tractor and most are hydro....

  • This one's for the ladies; is there a product that will clean the stains from your underwear?

I know you know what I mean; underwear is perfectly fine for a good while, but when those stains start to set in, you just don't feel like they are clean. I am fairly sure there has to be a product out there somewhere specifically made to pre-treat panties in that area before washing them so the stain gets knocked out. Anyone know what product might do that? I do use panty shields, but not when I sleep. I don't have a medical problem, and I do "clean" myself regularly. I'm talking regular, everyday stains, not period or anything like that. I haven't had a period in 20 years, so that's not the issue.

  • Jay Alexander wrote "Profanity is the crutch of a conversational cripple." Who is Jay Alexander?

I know it's not Miss Jay Alexander of "ANTM" fame. Could it be the famous comic/magician? I have not been able to find out who said this. Thanks. Source required for best answer.

  • No sons in the White House. ?

There is no best answer for this one, but has anyone noticed that we have not had presidents in the White House who have had sons for a long time now? Think about it. Clinton, GW and now Obama. We are setting it up for Hillary, I think.

  • New one for you; how many of you ladies have gone gray?

I colored my hair starting at age 40. I'm 52 now and decided this year to let it go gray cold turkey. It looks fabulous and I have had more compliments in the last two months on my hair than all my other 51 years combined. Anyone else doing cold turkey? There won't be a best answer of course because this is subjective, not informational.

  • Names for a female beagle dog?

I am considering adopting a full grown female beagle that was rescued as a stray. They gave her a temporary name that I don't like, so I was wondering if you can give me ideas for her name. She's a small size beagle, black and tan and white. Since there is no right or wrong answer, best answer will NOT be be valid here and not awarded. But thank you for your ideas. So far I have these in mind:

    Gypsy

    Lexy

    Cleo

    Patches

    Trixie

    Roxie

    Daisy

  • What does "also-ran" mean?

I see this term all the time, but never knew what it meant. Based on context, it appears to mean something like, "considered, but of little consequence." Is that right? Thank you.

  • Anyone else letting their dark hair go gray?

I started going gray in my early 20's, started coloring it in my late 30's, and now at 51 I am considering going natural, which is about 75% gray. My natural (and dyed) color is dark brown, like a semi-sweet chocolate brown. Anyone done this, and how did you transition it so you didn't look like a skunk??

  • I have a very loud co-worker.?

I actually have to insert ear plugs sometimes so that I can concentrate on my job. I have asked to be moved to another area, but all the equipment I use is in this room. She does not use any of it, but she doesn't have a problem, so she is not asking to move. She curses, is bossy and arrogant, and is totally a bigot ("Your opinion is always wrong; mine is always right.") My manager has attempted to diffuse the situation, but to no avail. As you might guess, someone who won't listen to YOUR opinion won't listen to her manager's either. So we all suffer from this. I won't even go into the annoying cell phone rings and incessant personal calls, of which we can all hear every word. I am at a loss. Should I pray for tolerance and keep wearing the ear plugs, or should I leave?

  • How can I ignore racial prejudice at work?

I am Caucasian, and work with both Caucasians and African Americans, and respect and like all equally. However some of the whites are openly prejudiced against the blacks, and this bothers me. I don't know how to respond to the "N" word comments. So far I have told these men (they are ALL men who are doing this) that I have black friends who are much nicer than some of my white friends (of course, they didn't take it personally like I meant it). In this day and age, it's hard to believe people still have such backwards ideas. God created us all equally and loves us all equally, even those prejudiced against others for no reason. What are your thoughts? Should I stop trying to be friends with the prejudiced folks? I will not stop being friends with the blacks; they are very nice and I admire and respect them all. They did nothing to deserve the attitude of the cavemen.
