New one for you; how many of you ladies have gone gray?

I colored my hair starting at age 40. I'm 52 now and decided this year to let it go gray cold turkey. It looks fabulous and I have had more compliments in the last two months on my hair than all my other 51 years combined. Anyone else doing cold turkey? There won't be a best answer of course because this is subjective, not informational.

Update:

What an inspiration you folks are! Going grey is not for everyone, but I am so glad to know I'm not alone. My mom told me Sunday that I look younger, and I've had more compliments than ever before on my natural hair color. Greys have more fun! Thank you for your awesome replies!!!!! You rock!!!

I'm almost 60 and still do not have the courage to go grey. I have noticed that friends who have taken the plunge look fabulous.

I had my first gray hair at 14, pulled it out. The next at 18, pulled it out. By my late 20s I was pulling out gray hairs once or twice a month. I started coloring my hair around 40 too. Last year I let it grow out. NOT a pretty sight. After about 4 months I started coloring it again. I'm 63, so coloring my hair is ridicules, but it sure looks bad when I don't.

I dyed, hi-lighted and did a number of things during the time my hair started going gray, but after I retired and the amount of gray had increased more than 50/50, I decided that it was just too much maintenance to keep coloring it. I have had many more compliments since I let it go gray and now use the money that I spend on dyes to get a good haircut. So much easier to not worry about 'roots' showing.

I think that's great. I am sure my wife has her hair colored a couple times a year but she has lighter hair and I don't try to find any gray. My wife is just a year older than you and personally I think natural gray is kinda sexy.

( Alright, I will now get a bunch of thumbs down)

Heck, about 99 percent of my hair is silver but it doesn't bother me since I have about 95 percent of my hair left. Counting what now grows on my eyebrows, ears, nose and back, I probably have more hair than I did when I was 20.

Life has got to be simpler to let it go. Congrats.

Never heard the expression Cold Turkey before re: hair color, cute and unique description.

I along w/Lo'Reale (sp?) kept me a dizzy, dumb blonde, as I aged I figured out, stupid, going thru all that coloring and the expense.

I didn't even know for sure exactly what color would grow in.

I'm 70 and my hair is thick , dark brown. I am grateful all that bleaching didn't make me bald. I have it shoulder length now but its due for a short cut. Maybe 10 gray strands, I have very thick hair.

So if you see me out somewhere , please say Hi~~

I have let it grow out, and it's a pretty almost white color; however the texture is so fine and limp that it would no longer hold a style. I've gone back to dying, but I chose a blond that is very close to my natural white hair color, and it's barely noticeable. The good thing is that it thickens my hair a bit so that it will hold a style for most of the day and it's almost unnoticeable as it grows out, so I don't have to do it as often as I did when I was choosing a color that was a few shades darker.

I let my hair go gray about 6 or 10 years ago , just can't remember. I was starting to feel overwhelmed with all the extra jobs I had to do with raising my grand daughter that I decided to quit colouring my hair. I like it this way and wear it proudly.

Started going grey in my early 30's and dyed it up to 3 years ago. I now nearly 60.

My Grandma, Mum, and cousin all went a lovely shade of silver white, me I range from dark grey to white.

My hairdresser had a fit when I said I was going "au natural" It took a while to get used to it but all the family said it looked good after I took the plunge.

Having a good cut is a must I think. I wouldn't dream of dying it again.

All I would say to somebody contemplating it is - go for it.

The worse part is actually growing it out, but winter is a good time to start as you can cover up with hats and scarfs.

Quit using hair color beginning of 2008. Began 5 years ago when oldest son went off to Basic Training. Only tinted my hair cause the kids said I looked old like a Grandma. Well, I am a Grandma to 7 and told them, wasn't tinting my hair anymore. I'm happy, that's what's important, they just have to get used to it. Salt and pepper grey, looks nice and is very long.

I started covering the gray when I was 39. I stopped last year at 53. I wanted it to look fabulous, but it just didn't. I went back to coloring it and EVERYONE told me how much better it looked and how much younger I looked.

Mine just started graying a few years ago and I didn't notice it much since I always kept it short but now that I'm letting it grow long this year I can notice it much more and it's calico more than any specific color. I'm 57.
