This is really tough, we had a dog that would hide under the table whenever there was a thunderstorm or fireworks.
The vet ended up giving us medication that we could give to him to keep him calm, because the poor little guy just got too worked up.
Some dogs grow out of the fear, but others don't. I have had success with dealing with the fireworks by bringing the dog into the room where the tv is on...and I turn the volume up a bit to hide the noises.
They say it is best not to make a big fuss about what's going on, because the dog will notice your energy and look to you to see how you are reacting to things. If you console the dog too much, then he feels as if he is being rewarded for showing his anxiety...so that can sometimes just re-inforce his behavior. Better to distract them with playing and try to minimize the amount of noise from the weather that the dog hears.
Perhaps Caesar Milan The Dog Whisperer's book might have some tips for dealing with this problem!

I don't think this can be cured. If your indoors you could try playing loud music to drown out the sound. One thing to definitely not do. When the dog gets scared don't make a fuss. Doing that the dog thinks you are afraid as well. Just ignore him as much as possible.

When it storms, sit with your dog and tell him how good he is and pet him calmly. Also, if you or anyone else in the home is jumpy or afraid of the storms, that's probably where your dog is getting his fear from. Make sure, too, that your dog has a "safe" spot he can go to so he doesn't have to be nervous-- like a crate with blankets inside AND a blanket covering the top, so it's like a den.

There are some all natural meds you can get that sometimes help or you can ask your vet. It's not unusual for dogs to be nervous during a storm, just try to comfort but not too much because that will reinforce the behavior

My dog was afraid of storms. I would just pet her and tell her "its okay" in a very calm voice. Get on the dogs level allow him/her to cuddle.... or if you allow them on the furniture let him/her snuggle up to you there. I did this with my dog eventually she became less scared, but never really got over it. Towards the end she would just shake a bit, but was not nearly as terrified as she was before. (she has since passed)

My dog is scared of thunder too. I suppose if you record the thunder and play it enough he might get use to it. When they train horses for a western movie, they fired a gun near the horse so they become acustom to the noise. The same thing may work for thunder and your dog.

What we do is play fetch with the dog during the storm. They learn that there is nothing to be afraid of.

Have you ever seen the movie 'Because of Win Dixie'? No, there is not. He/she has a pathological fear of thunderstorms.

whose dog is afraid of them also.
Best luck. God bless.
