Are you British?

Do you call yourself British? Or do you call yourself Scottish, Welsh, Irish or English?

I usually call myself English, but say British when I'm talking to people from overseas who might not understand the difference. It gets me mad when people refer to the UK as 'Scotland, Wales and Britain'.

Update:

Yeah, thanks Caroline M, but I'm not confused and I do know my geography. If my question was badly worded came across sounding that way it's down to me typing it in a hurry and not putting enough thought into what was meant as a simple question. Nappies to change and all that...

I consider myself English as I was born in England. The Scottish, Welsh and Irish are proud of their birthright, why can't us English be so too?

I applied for a job once at a well known supermarket. The application form asked if my ethnic makeup was of the following:

    White British

    White Scottish

    White Welsh

    White Irish

There was no White English so I put that in the "other" section. I didn't get the job...

I'm English. I have a Welsh Gt. grandmother and a Scottish 3x Gt. grandfather. I have a French couple as direct ancestors back in 1683, and my oldest DNA goes back to somewhere East of where Moscow is some 17,000 years ago and a Clan Mother called "Una"

  • I'm American of Irish and Scottish decent. If someone call me and said English, I would only think of England. If I were to hear from someone in Wales or Scotland I would assume they would say they were Scottish or Welsh.

    I'm English of Welsh extraction.

My children are English of Welsh and Irish Extraction

My grandson is English with Irish Welsh and Scots extraction. We are Liverpudlians (not football) which gives an idea of what a melting pot this city is

I agree you should state that you are English.Being British refers to people from the British Isles. Now within the British Isles is the Irish Republic and that is an independent nation and not connect to that island across the Irish Sea in any shape or form.
