Kosovo... why are some countries for their independence, and some against?

I'm happy for them, but so far, I've only heard arguments against. Governments are saying it's a bad precedent, and that the ethnic Bosnians living there will now be targets. So why do some countries support the split? What reasons? I'm just curious. :)

Why did they want to split in the first place?

Update:

Ah, that would do it, wouldn't it? Now I remember. I wasn't really paying attention to the world when it was happening.

Update 2:

Forgive me... I meant the ethnic Albanians (I think. I'm still learning about this).

Update 3:

Funny thing is, I now think I meant ethnic Serbians. Go ahead. Laugh at me.

The United States favors creation of an Islamic state in Kosovo because it will create problems for Serbia and will further subdivide the former Yugoslavia into states too small to create problems for us. Russia favors a strong Serbia and does not like the precedent it creates because they believe it offers support to Chechnyan and other Islamic terrorists against Russia.

Kosovo is 98% Moslem and Serbia is 80% Orthodox Christian. Yugoslavia split because Josef Tito was the only leader strong enough to hold them together. There have been ethnic wars in that region for centuries.

I would imagine part of it is because the Serb-controlled government instigated ethnic clensing against the ethnic Albanians in Kosovo during the mid-1990s. When that happens, I would imagine there would a strong wish not to be part of the same country anymore.

The problem comes in that these countries and states fracturing off are racial segregated states that means they will be more than happy to continue a campaign of racism and hate v.s. their neighbors now that they feel they are all one ethnic group. in short it makes the area MORE polarized toward violence against minorities than ever before and we know all of these people historically are capable of outright geneside if they are given the upper hand over any other group.
