Any other Democrats out there dissapointed with the Democratic stance on Immigration?
I believe in standard Democratic values and am very liberal. But would it be too much to ask for a Democratic candidate who will actually do something about illegal immigration? I'm talking about serious border control, no licenses, no welfare, no medicaid, no birthright act, nor any other incentives for illegal immigration. I like the proposed plans to legalize them - fining them, making them learn English, etc, but doubt this will be strictly implemented. With the existing incentives above, we will still have millions of people crossing the border to receive free health care, spit out "American Citizens" and steal jobs that Americans DO want and USED to have. Hospitals are going bankrupt and tax-paying Americans can't afford to compete with illegals in many working-class fields. This is a HUGE problem and very much overlooked by liberals.
Also outraged that Obama had the audacity to say that illegal immigrants are simply a "scapegoat" for American unemployment!
Joshua M - I realize the question was about black unemployment, but it goes without question that illegal immigrants have taken jobs from both black and white Americans. Hillary was quick to admit this point, and Obama looked ridiculous. It was clear he was just trying to win the Hispanic vote or that he really is that clueless.

I completely understand what you're talking about. I felt from the very outskirt that those 2006's marches were ridiculous! As United States citizens we have many rights and 1 of them is to the pursuit of happiness. My happiness was threatened by the ability of illegal immigrants marching and disturbing traffic and road conditions, on a weekday no less! There were many legal immigrants and naturalized as well as natively born US citizens that marched as well. However, many held signs that said "I'm an illegal". Why weren't they arrested or held for questioning? If someone robbed a bank or even attempted to, how fast do you think the police would show up if they held a sign saying "I held-up the corner bank today!"?? It's a horrible shame that a crackdown didn't happen right then. The problem is further exacerbated by politicians cutting funding for schools and healthcare, and then want to do nothing about ONE of the underlying problems-- illegal immigrants and their children, whether they be US citizens or immigrants themselves, who seek out healthcare (pay few if any taxes), and use the public school system (which some children see no point in learning English or furthering their education. I'm speaking at the elementary and high school level. Not college level- because I know of several who have worked hard and done well for themselves but now are undercut because they can't afford college because they were infants/toddlers when they came to America-- they are getting screwed over, they would be contributing in a positive manner, and yet are denied furthering themselves?!?)
I have worked both in education and now in the healthcare industry. I have seen first-hand the bureaucracy of it all and it's sickening and frustrating.
Lastly, Obama was saying how illegals aren't the reason why America's unemployment is where it is. He was saying that if you say illegal immigration is why Joe Black doesn't have a job, it's the same reason why Joe White doesn't have a job-- "free-trade economy" and the globalization-effect that we are living right now is the reason why Jose Hispaniola has a job in Central and South America, or Chi Yea has one in China. Your local illegal immigrant is coming here to steal your job and ruin the economy so that he can relocate to a better city?- doubtful, but possible. Because eventually the economy will suck everywhere! Illegal immigration is a serious problem, but Obama wants people to understand, we aren't going to get our jobs back to lower and middle America by throwing out all illegal immigrants who work. We can force every employer to account for every single employee no matter if they only work 1 hour a week. They are still going to be here and we still aren't going to be able to raise the minimum wage, and get America towards getting American companies to invest in America than outsourcing or moving their jobs across the border.
In closing, I have to say, WE need to force our local politicians, town, city, county, and state to account for our tax dollars and then, by virtue, force the federal gov't to show us, if a single person can cross that border than I'm not safe in my own country, and that threatens my fundamental rights, of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness-- the sole responsibility of THIS gov't insured by our founders.

I think the GOP is saying what people want to hear, but they cant realistically/effectively make it happen. The Dems are being more realistic/pragmatic which is less popular than "No new taxes" and other rhetoric.
In the end, only your reps Congress will make these laws and because it is so complex, they will argue for years before they do anything. Expecting any President to fix this on his/her own is dreaming.
Several questions:
- Once you capture 12 million illegal aliens, where do you hold all of them?
- Logistically, how do you move them?
- How do you process all this?
- What is the cost to fund the training of thousands (field officers, data entry, information tech, etc.)
- Does this massive exportation/deportation effort take precedence over funding for other projects or do we continue borrowing from China, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia?
- Are there other less costly ways that can also be effective?
What Obama said about the 'scapegoat' thing was in response to a question about how the illegal immigrants are specifically hurting the black workers more than anyone else in the country. His response was that he remembers unemployment, ghettos, and other problems prior to immigration becoming a big issue, and that for someone to say that black men are jobless b/c of illegal immigrants is not accurate.
I don't like seeing illegals getting free lunches (figuratively and literally). But we need to be realistic and start with a goal that is attainable.

yes. Preach on. I don't like the "package deal" you get with a party affiliation. I think we need to close the border and cut the flow of our milk and honey into Mexico. Let the Mexicans work thier way up to where we were in Mexico. They are only taking jobs because we tolerate it. These jobs would be gladly filled by an American Citizen, asking a living wage and health benefits. But on the same hand I feel that no United States CITIZEN should have to die in the United States because they can't afford healthcare. I don't think its too much to ask for someone who can see the total picture.

As you point out, it is a very complicated issue...another aspect to the issue is enforcing the laws. There are so many illegals here that we have to do something with them. You can't just wish them away...as you said, the proposed plans to work towards legalization were at least an attempt to start a dialog. However, i have yet to hear a reasonable solution.

I would love for my party to take a greater stance against illegal immigration. I am always outraged by Obama and his supporters.

Obama will say yes to anything, immigrants should stay in Mexico and fight for a better Mexico -- not dump their problems on us unless they come in here legally.
Peace,

you are in the wrong party for that. Until make your votes conditional, and hold them to that standard, thats what you'll get. Thats why so many of us conservatives don't like McCain, he is an open boarders fan too.
