Sounds like he has the flu. Go to another doctor or go back to the ER would be what I would do, refusing to see him is absolute bull! To get the fever down if it is that high, I give a double dose of childrens tylenol and a single dose of childrens motrin/ibuprofen. ( I am not telling you to do this, I just know this is what I had to do when mine got high fevers and it is what the hospital ER did everytime I took a child in....call your doctor or a nursing service for clarification, I will not be held responsible for your choice of childs medication and/or dosages, I am not a doctor.). Give him a cool, not cold, just barely warm bath...as the water evaporates off the skin it helps bring the fever down and cool water helps with dehydration....keep pumping fluid down him, water, white grape juice, gatorade, pedialite, kool aid....whatever you can get him to take.

  • The only way I know to check for flu is a nasal wash, if they swabbed his throat, it was a check for strep. Rapid strep screen tests sometimes (15%) show false negative results. I can smell strep throat on the breath. Not all Doctors can. You may be underdosing with Tylenol. It's 15 mg / kilogram. A kilogram is 2.2 pounds. You can give him Ibuprofen at a dose of 10 mg / kg . if he has had the fever nore than 3 days or seeems to be getting sicker to you (I generally trust the mother's judgement in that) take him back to your family doctor. The key to flu and strep throat is lots of fluids, (plain water is not a good idea, nor are carbonated beverages)even if they have a sore throat. If they are nauseous, give frequent small sips of clear fluids. They will get a lot of fluids but not a lot at one time. If you distend their stomachs they are more likely to vomit. A dry throat hurts worse than a wet one. Remember, Viruses do not respond to antibiotics and giving them for a virus may cause diarrhea. Do not insist on them, Let your doctor decide. May God bless you both, you seem like a very concerned and competent mother

Look at his throat with a flashlight. If there is white spots, it could be strep. It sure sounds like the flu though. With strep, usually don't have cold symptoms. My son gets strep every year. If he was flu negative, it could be a virus. There are several viral illnesses out there with same symptoms as flu (influenza). I would keep calling your pediatricians office if he continues to get worse.

drink plenty of liquids. Give him motrin and tylenol together for the fever - ask the pharmacist about the correct amount. Try a cool cloth on his head to help as well. for a more herbal approach try Echinacea, Zinc and Vitamin C. Unfortunately some of these things just have to run their coarse. I have an 11 year old as well so I know how hard it is to see them sick.

Call his doctor back and ask for an appointment or telephone advice. Saying they won't see a patient because of flu outbreak is ridiculous. If your child is an established pateint with the physician you can claim abandonment. If they refuse, call the State Board of Medicine and report the physician.

If he is taking antibiotics it should kill the strep virus anyways. If not you can call your Doc and request a prescription of antibiotics over the phone.

My daughter who is 11 had the flu last month. We bought sprite or 7up to keep her hydrated. regular water was making her nauseous. As long as he is peeing and drinking something you just have to ride this out. Keep him warm but not sweaty. Also try to encourage toast or crackers to eat.

He will be fine. keep us posted

I'd call another doctor or clinic. In the mean time keep him drinking plenty of water or sprite at least. I can't believe they didn't check him for strep!! He can take motrin/ibuprofen alternating with the tylenol. Not at the same time, just in between doses of tylenol.

You need to just chill and keep giving him fluids. Lots of fluids and keeping him cool is the answer to a recovery.

Oh, and you took him to the emergency room for a fever? I guess you don't have health insurance. That sucks and with McCain winning as of right now they'll be no end in sight for you.

Sorry to hear that Lori, lots of love and I think your doctor is a doink. Even if they think he's going to be alright, they should still make a better effort to assure the parent.

I would get him checked for strep, could be a combination?

while your at home you can see if he will drink green tea, honey and lemon for his soar troat and if the tylenol doesnt work try motrin, with a fever you should always keep him hydrated (pedialyte), and make him consume lots of vitamin c (oranges) when you go back to the ER ask for a second or third opinion they cant refuse you, you can also try visiting another ER room if your close to one
