What is the thin layer between orange segments called?

Im guessing it has a name but have never heard it. Thanks

    The membrane is the thin layer between orange (or grapefruit) sections. The zest is the outside or colored part of the skin and the pith is the bitter covering (white) that is bitter between the zest/skin and the edible sections.

    I believe it's the pith. The zest is the actual outer layer of skin.

    lunachic is right the white stuff is called the pith. If you ever put oranges in a juicer do not put this part in. It will make your juice very bitter

    I think it is still called Zest like the inner part of the skin.
