How can I keep my kids occupied on the airplane??

I'm traveling cross-country on an airplane without my husband to help with my 3 kids (ages 4, 5, and 6). Do you have any ideas of how I can keep them occupied on the airplane? If I bring their "learning laptops" or Leapsters, will they be able to play with them without driving everyone else batty? Electronic devices are probably my best bet for keeping them quiet, but those make noise themselves and don't have headphones. I want to be sensitive to the other travelers, but also to my children at the same time. Any tips?

Update:

Can I clarify that our total travel time (not including driving to/from the airport, which adds an extra hour and a half) will be 10 hours and 50 minutes. I also cannot afford to buy new gaming systems when they just got Leapsters for Christmas and the airfare alone for this trip is over $1000. So basically I guess my question is this - would my travelmates rather hear the kids playing/singing/chatting amongst themselves at a 4-5-6 year old level, or would they rather hear electronic devices? LOL It's more of a trade off... They can't color for 10 hours! Or read quietly for 10 hours (when only one is a real "reader" anyway). Me reading them a story only takes about 5-10 minutes. :)

Electronic devices will probably work the best and if you don't have headphones you're going to want to invest in them. Plus side to the headphones: they will help with the ear-popping at high altitudes. You could ask a stewardess for a pair of the on-flight headphones but there's a chance you might not get them. Aside from that, reading, which most kids aren't into these days, coloring books, drawing pads, anything they can interact with really.

bring it all, leapsters, dvd players, games, lots of different ones, when i travel one of the carry ons is full of just that, toys, snacks, crayons etc. i let the kids give input on what they want and then i add surprise stuff from the library, or dollar store. cheap headphones are a worthwhile investment. check the airline, on a long flight like that they may have movies. also a first aid kid and naps will helps on the long trip, have them travel in comfy pj's too

Magazines books, anything like that really & electronic devices should keep them quiet and if you dont want to disturb others then just turn the volume down a little.

    Good Luck x

Make them go to sleep by keeping them awake through the night before the flight.

Sometime the simplest solution is the best. Paper and crayons, or you could (quietly) read them some stories. Also their favourite toys, if small, would be useful.

Source(s): This is how I entertained my children once on a two hour flight.

Mine stayed occupied just looking out the windows on there first flight. Its a very new experience to them and should be enjoyable to them.

you can buy them a nintendo DS or PSP. These have headphones and they won't say a word if they are playing it lol. Also you could take colouring books and puzzle books etc
