Newborn has very dry skin?
Hi my baby boy was born on the 10th and he had extremely dry skin even at the hospital. The peditrician told me to use vaseline (no baby lotions) and that soon it will get better. Well his little hands and feet still look pretty dry and flaky...is this normal? will he have skin problems or will it really just go away on it's own. My mother in law seems to think that a good bath will help clear it up, but his belly button is still attached.
I have only been giving him sponge baths. And yes I meant is belly button stump is still attached...lol

He will be fine, that is totally normal. It will go away. Try Aquaphor. It is like Vaseline but a bit better. Yes the bath will help but it is not necessary. This is not a sigh of any skin issues.
Your sweetie will look plump and cute very soon.

Dry skin is normal, my son has it too. Vaseline is the only thing you can use, and make sure you use it in the morning, at night and with every diaper change. DONT put it on his head or face. I put it on my sons face, which clogged his pours and caused him to break out... which was even worst because he scratches his face... it was a terrible ordeal. It took over a week for it to go away.
My son is a month old and just got his first bath last week. You should not give a bath if he was circumsized for sure and because the cord needs to be DRY to fall off. Newborns dont have perfect skin.

It's completely normal. I didn't put anything on my baby and it went away. The skin on his hands and feet looked like they were peeling. It's just a lot drier on the outside than it was when he was swimming around in water. His skin just needs to adjust.
I didn't give my little guy a bath for a few weeks. I'd think a bath would just dry him out further.

he may just be adapting to being outside the womb, but it may also be eczema. It is too early to tell, and really even if it is eczema there is nothing you can do except put lotion on it. My daughter had really bad eczema and I used Johnson's soothing naturals and it worked wonders. We tried everything with her and that was the only thing that worked. I was sceptical of it at first because I was told not to use anything scented, however I tried it on her and it made a huge improvement. For now, I would keep using vaseline on him, when his stump falls off and is totally healed you can try an oatmeal bath.

I think it is normal since he hasn't had a bath. I wouldn't worry about it. I've seen dry hands and feet on newborn babies at this age and I don't think it is a problem. If it continues after he has a bath, and he get a bumpy dry rash, you can use the baby eczema cream that Johnson and Johnson makes. I had to do that with my baby. Now he doesn't even have lotion after a bath anymore and his skin isn't dry at all.

I understand you might be scared to give the baby a bath because of his "belly button" give him a bath just be VERY careful. It might help the problem. I know someone else already suggested Aveeno it is VERY good and some people swear by it. I used it when my daughter had the chicken pox. Good luck!

What do you mean by "My mother in law seems to think that a good bath will help clear it up, but his belly button is still attached."??? Are you NOT giving him baths because the cord stump is still attched?!?!

I have a 5 month old and he has always and dry skin. The Dr gave us a cream called Aveno. It is an oat mill cream. So your baby cna get in from them or you can buy it in boots or about £8.
Congrats on the new arrival.

I have a two month old that had this same problem. My doctor suggested using the baby oil method and a soft brush. I had the same consern you do so I asked. Babies don't make the same natural oils in there skin so the skin doesn't get greasy with the use of oil or lotion. good luck!
