Why is St. Christopher on my necklace?
I have a necklace and on the front it says, "St. Christopher, protect us" and on the back, it shows him, carrying Christ as a child. Now, I looked up the story, and found out that he carried people across a river to serve God, but why do I have him on my necklace, asking him for protection?

I know that. But what I was taught is that we pray to God through people. If that makes sense... I'm not sure if I'm wording this right.. See, we pray to God but through Mary when we say the "Hail Mary" (If that example helps)

I was about to give you the 10 points for your honesty.
Ha, yes, all these are good answers, and thank you. But the one I have has a picture of two wrestlers on it. How does traveling tie with wrestling?

He's the patron saint for travellers. That is what he is most commonly known for. However, he is also revered by athletes, mariners, and ferrymen. He is also the patron saint of other causes such as archers, bachelors, bookbinders epilepsy, floods, gardeners, sailors, surfers, and toothaches.
So perhaps you are an epileptic athlete who works as a bookbinder, surfs in his free time and has trouble with his teeth.

St. Christopher is the Patron Saint of Travellers, because the legend says that he helped the Christ child to cross the river and so he was made a saint. Sometimes people give you a gift of a St. Christopher medallion if you are going travelling. Some people hang one in their car for protection.
So, to sum up, you wear a St. Christopher necklace to keep you safe while travelling.

It's just a tradition. Christopher means "Christ-bearer". Unfortunately for the many generations of St. Christopher medal wearers and dashboard statue owners, St. C. is purely legendary. He was dropped from the saint's calendar in the 1960's, when Vatican II cleared out the fictional or questionable saints. According to the story, St. Christopher would carry people across the river because he wanted to help people. One day he was carrying a child who got heavier and heavier. Eventually he realized that the child was the child Jesus, who was the whole world. Amazing that this was believed for so long, eh? A nice story, though.
I remember a funny comment on TV when I was a kid, when St. C. was dropped. A "man on the street" was interviewed about the changes to the calendar and said "I know St. Christopher isn't real, but I'm still going to pray to him, because I know he'd like that."

St. Christopher is the patron saint of travel. I assume that's the kind of answer you were looking for rather than a non-answer full of self-righteous proselytizing, like the first one you got?

St. Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. It was the custom to wear medals of the saints to ask for thier help and intercession in time of need and when we are requesting something of God in prayer.
