Could this be a side effect of my dog eating chocolate?

Hi! I usually don't ask such crazy questions about pets...I usually can answer them on my own, but this is a little out of the ordinary. My toy poodle ate some milk chocolate kisses ...quite a few actually. It has already been well over 24 hours since she ate the chocolate and she has stopped vomitting, no diarhea ever occured, but she started whinning early this morning.....not constant, but enough to annoy you. I thought it might be 'cause she had to pee...'cause I read where this can cause her to have to pee more often, but she never offered to go anymore than usual.

What's going on? Has anyone else's dog done this after eating chocolate? I don't think this is an emergency situation, since she has stopped vomitting. She has got into chocolate before and she did not do this. I gave her some pediatric electrolyte solution for dehydration too. (Vets give it to calves with scours.) But is there a chance of any phsycological damage or maybe just a tummy ache still?

Update:

Some of you people on here are nuts! No where in my narrative did I say that I purposely gave my baby chocolate. I'm not an idiot. Please stop making assumptions.

chocolate can't cause phychological problems. it can cause cardiac issues. just to be on the safe side i'd call your vet.

did you baby her while she was sick? not that there's anything wrong with it, but she might have become accustomed to all of the attention and that's all it is. put her back on her regular food and exercise schedule and act normally and see if that helps.

good luck. glad she seems to be ok.

This is a part of the link below ... sounds like a vet visit might be in order ...

Chocolate: Most dogs love chocolate. It's so easy, when you're eating a chocolate bar, to give the dog a piece, just as a reward for being your friend. I'll bet the kids do the same.

Chocolate contains caffeine and bromethalin, both of which are poisonous to your dog. Dark chocolate is more dangerous, because it is more concentrated. A dog can consume milk chocolate and appear to be fine because it is not as concentrated, but it is still dangerous. The darker and more concentrated the chocolate, the more dangerous it is.

Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include difficulty in breathing, vomiting, arrhythmia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, tremors, staggering, fever, increased heart rate, and can result in seizures, coma and death.

My dog ate half of a giant candy bar before and he got diarrhea but that was it. DARK chocolate is what can kill your dog because of the high levels of theobromine. My dog ate milk chocolate which has the lowest level of it. He is fine so your dog probably just has a tummy ache. But if you are really worried i would call a vet and ask them about it before you bring her in.

I think it'd be best to keep chocolate away from her. She may just still have a bad tummy ache. Just monitor her over the next few hours....keep a close eye on her overnight...if she still looks sick, take her to the vet.

They most it could be is that her tummy hurts or something! If she already vomitted, the chocolate should not be in her system anymore so you should be safe there! Good Luck! I hope shes ok!

  • My dog ate befor chocolate and she never got sick from it..

But I would call your vet if she was vomitting from it that's not good..

I'm sorry she got sick I hope every thing is ok..
